I recently bought a post ban Colt match target A2 rifle on Auction Arms. In the picture it looks like the upper has an A by the rear drum sight. My bushmaster has an A 2 on it, from Anchor Harvey. I thought that all Colt's were stamped C MB, are some factory Colt's marked different? The gun is in 99% and is all Colt, but from the pic it looks like an A. I posted this before abd I only  got one reply and all I know is that Anchor Harvey makes forgings for different co's. Any help would be appreciated, thanks Billy

I've seen Colt A3 uppers marked C AF, but I've seen others with no markings at all.  Maybe the link below can shed some light on it.

I have a brand new Colt A3 16" and 20" HBAR with the C AF markings. My old Colt 16" light weight upper had CM stamped on it.

I have two early Pre-A1 Colt Air Force uppers.  They both look like this one:

(Image borrowed from Biggerhammer)

No 'CM' under the sight, but two small rollmarks forward of the Ejection Port.  One is a "C" inside a square and the other is a triangle with some kind of marking inside it.  I'll need to get a magnifying glass to see it as it's quite small.

I wanted some slick-side uppers for an early-style/lightweight AR project and went with the Colt military surplus because they have the small pivot pin hole.

I have a Colt A3 upper marked like the one on the bottom in the picture.  It was produced under contract by Diemaco in Canada.

When Colt got the first Air Force contract for M16s, they didn't have any forge/Colt marks under the sight, because nobody else made the durn things, and Colt was only using one forge. The two small stampings ahead of the ejection port are Colt's proof and acceptance marks.

When the M16A1 contract came about, and Colt needed to get forgings from more than one source, is when you started getting the C-H,K,M,etc markings.  That's also the time when Colt started marking internals w/the proprietary "C" stamp.  H&R and GM had just been given contracts for M16s, so it became important to know who made any specific piece, in case of breakages.

Nah, this is linked to the FAQ so we're helping future generations of newbs.

ETA.
I didn't know that CMT forged parts. Do you mean Cardinal Forge?

Yes, I hadn't mentioned that one bc it's mentioned in another of the FAQ linked threads.

I'd appreciate notice of any other threads on this topic when they're found.

So the center upper in that pic has a keyhole mark on it? It's hard to see. I thought it looked more like a house, rectangular (long sides upright) with a triangle on top. I thought it might be Cardinal's birdshead mark.

Can you confirm that the bottom upper is a Diemaco mark? I've got an email into them.

ETA,
Here's the email:

Yes, the last upper receiver in the photograph is one of ours (Diemaco). The Diemaco triangular letter "D" logo is forged, cast, and stamped on many of our parts.

I have an R6530 with an A2 upper with CM marking near the carry handle, and M4 feed ramp cuts. It also has the C and triangle marking as in Bradd_D's pic.
