First off, thanks for looking

I tried the search function but came up empty. Please accept my apology in advance if this question has been answered before-I couldn't find it.

My newest RRA 16" CAR upper has a forging mark that I've never seen before. It is a keyhole with three dots in it from top to bottom.

Does this sound familiar? I can post a pic if anyone cares to see it.

Thanks in advance for your help!!

I thought the key hole mark was ASA's?!?
I see them all of the time as inexpensive uppers at gun shows.

Thanks for the info J3!

I haven't fired it yet but so far I'm extremely impressed with the fit and finish. It fits a little too tightly in my preban Colt lowers but I'm sure that will work itself out over time.

The finish is very even and well done-it's not splotchy at all like some others I've owned.

I'm really looking forward to shooting it. I've never owned an upper half in this configuration before [:)]

Shouldn't it be a Rock River Arms upper and not have any thing such as another manufacturers markings on it?

Rock River (like many AR builders) doesn't make their own parts. They assemble rifles with parts produced by subcontractors.

Continental Machine and Tool of Connecticutt for example makes lower recievers for RRA and other AR builders. RRA just puts their own brand name and serial number on them.

Wilson makes RRAs barrels.

Edit: Where did J3's post go?

i might be wrong on this,

but i think the marking have to do with the manufacturer of the raw forgings.

But the as it was said earlier,
Most AR companies (maybe all?) buy the finished machined part from machine shops like Continental or Lewis or?

You are exactly right [:)]

It is a manufacturers forging mark. My Colt M4 carbine upper for example has a similiar keyhole mark, but it doesn't have the three dots within the keyhole like this one does.

The lineage of these parts is quite fascinating to me. Two of my Colt hammers have a "C" on them, but one of my OEM Colt spares has an "S" and one of them has an "M". My Colt match trigger kit also has an "S" on it. Coincidentally my RRA hammer has a similiar "M" marking on it, so that makes me wonder if the same manufacturer makes hammers for both Colt and RRA.

Cerro Metal products. Yes, I'm sure, I emailed them, they answered.

Thanks Tweak!

Unfortunately a search for me didn't bear any fruit-probably because I can only search back 30 days.

This topic of forging marks is begging for a tacked image database. [}:D]

Yes, it should be tacked, along with a couple of other questions that get asked about ten times a week[:D]. I even presumed to e mail the forum moderater about it about a year ago. Never even got a response to the e mail, much less a tack.

Guess you don't get answers if you don't pay for the privilege.

I agree, I'll add a section to the Troubleshooting FAQ and as threads pop up regarding the subject I would appreciate notice of them.
