Okay guys,
I've contacted Justin from www.cncgunsmithing.com on the Detachable A1 Carry Handles and he has agreed to make these up if we can get together an order for 20 of them.

These would be supplied without the sight parts, but I can procure those for anyone who would want those as well.

If we can get the 20 for Justin to do this, his pricing would be $78 a piece plus applicable shipping.

I DO NOT WANT TO RUN THIS AS A GROUP BUY!!

However, I am willing to coordinate this effort.

If you are interested, please post into this thread.

MODS, if you believe this should get moved over to the Group Buy Section, please let me know.

The pictures below are from Justin's website.

Very interesting, I would probably be in for one, but I cant' say 100% yes right now and I don't want to blow smoke.

What time frame are you looking at?

I got the first 4 Justin ever made. As soon as I zero my M4 I will start using one. The quality is fantastic. Count me in for another one.

Just substitute an A2 aperture for the A1 aperture and they work great.

I'd buy one.  I would prefer it be complete with all parts, including the A2 aperture.

I guess Diemaco won't sell them to you?

Light weight, fewer parts to mess up settings, and most people don't use the A2 sights anyway with the drum.

I'm not too learned on these, but is it possible to cut these down as a sorta retro-buis?

This might sound like a nitpick, but I just noticed a difference between the Diemaco and cncgunsmithing.com designs.  If you look at the Diemaco handle below, you'll see that the cutout under the windage knob is smaller.  Looking at the 3D model from cncgunsmithing.com, it looks like he tried to preserve the overall height of the cutout by shifting it upwards and around the windage knob.  I'd buy the handle either way, but if he's open to suggestions...

Good suggestion, it'll also mean less machining around the cut out too.

Somehow, I don't think it's going to be difficult to line up 20 buyers...

Leave it to Cavalry Arms to always supply the customer with exactly what they want.

Now if I can only get them to start producing telestock adapters for 1300's.

Dam good question.

I have owned AR's for over 15 years now and I have only used the elevation adjustment on my A2 once. And that was just to see if my range guess was close to the elevation clicks on the sight. So I think that I could do without an A2 rear sight.

I am interested in one, with the A2 dual-size aperture. I would also second Not_a_Llama's cut-down version.  I see the Cav Arms SARS, but I like the asthetics of a cut-down A1.

Now Lumpy,

You did not read very closely!

At this point, pricing is $78 for the handle and whatever the actual cost of the sight pieces would be.

We may be able to drive this price down some as well if we get enough folks to pick one up.

I get the impression we'll be installing our own sight components.

Personally, I like it like that.  I'd much rather have it set up the way *I* want.

Are you sure that A2 parts are 100% interchangeable with the A1 sight?  I've only heard that the aperture is.  Just looking at parts diagrams for both, it doesn't appear that the A2 windage assembly is a "drop-in" replacement for the A1.  If it is not, then I'd say stick to the A1 windage assembly.

[#38]
Oh, the only A2 part I'd swap out would be the aperture.  Maybe tritium, but I generally do just fine with low-light aperture and a tritium dot up front.

You can also add something like this, but I generally "set it and forget it" when it comes to windage.

[#39]
Not for nothing but $78 plus the cost of shipping and the sight components will make it just as expensive as an A2 removable handle, while the A1 is unique the price for a fully assmbled one should be $78 plus shipping then its worth it.

model927,
If these weren't custom CNC machined 1 by 1, I might agree.  However, the handle is $78 and sight components for an A1 run around $15 which puts you at $93.  Carry handles from Bushmaster run around $115, so you're still $20 cheaper, plus you have a limited production item.

Now, if we bump the numbers up past 100, the price would probably drop as well.

You should spend some time over at Justin's site and see just what goes into making these.

I'm also not understanding this.  If one wants to KISS, why don't they use an A1 receiver in the first place?  Getting fancy, using a flat top, then reversing directions and using a detaching carry handle with more primitive sights just doesn't compute for me but to each his own I suppose.

Keeping the entire rifle as simple as possible is not the sole motivation for the A1 detachable handle, if it is even a motivation at all (it is not for me).  Someone may very well choose to mount an ACOG off the handle, prefering to have the "set and forget" A1 system as a backup.  Or they could mount their reflex sight off the handguard rails or a goose-neck mount, having a fixed BUIS that protects the entire length of the receiver rail.  And in going with the flat top receiver, they will always have more flexibility in choosing different configurations in the future if they so desire.

The bottom line is that there are people who want a detachable carry handle, but don't want or need the extra complexity of the A2 rear sights, and prefer the A1 system in that regard.

Hmm.  Were demand high enough, maybe Justin could be convinced to program a few extra cuts?

After the current project is complete, of course!

Ask yourself this question. How many times have I actually made an adjusment to my A2 sights after they were sighted in?
Link Posted: 5/28/2004 5:58:23 AM EDT
[#47]
Then take it one step further and ask yourself that, if you indeed DON'T use the extra parts, do you want them around as something else to get in the way?  I've used the elevation drum maybe twice EVER, but I've had it screwed with many times.  Personally, I can do without it.
