Do you mean in the context of barrel markings specifically? I have seen MP used to mean only "Magnetic Particle" in the non-destructive test and evaluation field in general. For example here and here (the latter reference from the Los Alamos National Labs). For what it is worth, Bigger Hammer also lists MP as meaning just "Magnetic Particle" in the context of barrel markings: www.biggerhammer.net/ar15/barrelsbolts/ Of course, Colt apparently does magnetic particle testing hand-in-hand with proof load testing, so I wouldn't be shocked if the acronym MP includes both as you indicated. |

Thanks Tweak. The Army manual TM 9-1005-249-23&P does list MP as meaning "Magnetic Particle" in its section on checking erosion:  However, I take your blueprint to be more authoritative. By the way, the quality of that blueprint scan is too bad for me to see clearly, but is the mark deliberately formed so that the M and the P merge together to form a single symbol as in the photos from biggerhammer.net? I get 29 per on low 80 octane in my 4 y/o Subaru with 168000 miles on it.

Off topic, but "All your base are belong to us" first appeared in the opening sequence to the (badly translated) English version of the 1989 Japanese video game Zero Wing. For whatever reason, people found the phrase to be funny and it took on a life of its own. For other amusing examples of awkard Japanese to English translations, Google for "Engrish".

Several people have tagged this thread. I am assuming that those of you who have tagged it did so in order to be alerted when new contributions are added to the thread. For a while now I have just been quietly adding entries to the front page with edits rather than announcing them with new posts. Would those of you who have tagged the thread like me to add a post whenever I edit the front page?

I believe abbreviations are a sign of laziness, and are often associated with an on going web lingo "fad" and most are over used by people trying to "fit in" or "be cool"........and for the people who think THAT TYPING IN CAP LOCKS IS CONSIDERED "YELLING" get a life. its only larger typed letters and was never meant to be considered yelling by anyone but morons who spend way to much time on the net. Only my humble opinion or "OMHO" hehehehe

Sort of. "Pwned" is an example of "l33t 5p33k" (leet speak), a malformed dialect of English practiced by computer game fans and others of that bent. "Pwned" is thought to have originated as a typo for "owned", but now people deliberately type "pwned" because they believe it (and "leet speak" in general) to be cool.  I won't add pwned to this list of acronyms because it isn't an acronym and has nothing to do with AR-15s. Google for "l33t 5p33k" if you want to know more.

"Bump" is neither an acronym nor an abbreviation. It is shorthand for "Bump to the top." Whenever someone posts a new message in a topic, that topic is moved to the top of the index page for its forum. This keeps the topics with the most recent activity first on the index page and, thus, makes it easy for readers to locate and read new messages. If someone believes a topic has worthwhile information that should be brought to readers' attention but doesn't have any new content to add to that topic, that person will sometimes bump the topic to the top of the index page by posting an empty message or one that simply says "bump" so that readers will know why the otherwise empty post was made. I hope this helps, and let me offer you a belated welcome to ar15.com. Enjoy your stay.

SCAR stands for Special Operatons Forces Combat Assault Rifle
The contract was apprently awarded to FN Herstal and either the prototype or the production model is rumored to look like this:

Different people have different ideas as to what constitutes trolling, so I can't give you fixed list of behavior that constitutes trolling. However, in general a troll is someone who deliberately tries to disrupt the site by posting inflamatory comments, insults, attacks, spam, etc. If you read and follow the Coc (code of conduct), treat other members with respect and post civily, then you shouldn't have any problems.
