I'll be buying a new barrel in a couple of months. For some reason I like the idea of a BM dissipator, but have never handled one. My question is are dissipators reliable with the gas block so near the muzzle?

I love mine, a CAV15 lower with preban (for now) Dissipator upper:

Most Dissipators have a carbine gas system hidden under the handguard, so they are as reliable as an M4. Here are some examples of Dissipator barrels from Model 1 Sales that show the hidden gas block:

I like mine. It's a good compromise...short barrel w/ longer sight radius. I free floated my barrel w/ a HOGUE FFT. I only had one "failure", a blown primer got into the chamber and stopped the round from completely "seating". I was firing multiple types of ammo that day, Fed GM, xm193, and S&B and couldn't fine the offending spent case in the sand. That was my only problem in about 2500-3000 rounds

If I were you I would get the M4 profile Dissy barrel from BM its a little lighter

This is my next project gun. I really don't need another but i have to have one.

I was going to do a alum lower with green furnture but i sure like the MKII lower.

I really like the Dissy, I'm having Kurt's Kustom make a lightweight model, should handle real fast.

I have one that will be assembled on the stroke of midnight on Monday. It's a 14.5" w/vortex and a rifle length quad rail. Pics will be posted later...

I really enjoy my home built Dissipator.
Colt SP1 lower, with original internals.
Colt Green label A2 upper with custom made pivot push pin.
Bushmaster CAR stock with H buffer.
Bushmaster M4 Dissipator barrel with side sling adapter.
Army M68 primary sight.
Phantom flash suppressor.
Modified M7 bayonet.
Homemade Israeli style sling.
In over 3 years and more than 2,700 Lake City rounds
No malfunction, runs like a clock 100%. I love it.

Bought mine used at a gun show. Took a little gunsmithing to get it working reliably. Probably explains the lower price for preban. Anyway, since then it has worked great.

Best of both worlds: shorter barrel, longer sight radius.

I started gathering parts for a dissy build about a month ago. Now they're all in a heap in the closet because they didn't fit like I thought they would. I've spent $350 on tools in the past two weeks to get this thing together.

To each his own, This one is 7.4lbs as shown, And ugly is as ugly does

IMHO what a rifle weighs isnt as important as how well a Rifle Balances. I'll take a 14 pound rifle that balances perfect over a 6 pound nose heavy rifle anyday..............Udog

I love dissipators.

I seek practicallity and durability in a weapon. I like iron sights, so for me, Full-length sight radius is a big plus. The chance of accidental burns is greatly reduced because practcally the whole barrel is shrouded.

Think about if you ever had to lay on that rifle or hold it close to your body under cover. You don't want the barrel melting your web gear or scorching your clothing or tender flesh.

Mine is currently going through a end-of-ban transformation, but this is what it looked like before. It really wont look that much different when its done;

Believe it or not, in the picture above, we were using it to pop 8" balloons at 600 yards.
