Here's my attempt at an old school clone.

SP-1 barrel from the EE
Upper from my local dealer
Lower and LPK from RB Precision
Buttstock and Grip from EE
Bolt carrier group & charging handle from ADCO

I know it's not authentic, but this one is mine!

Very nice, just be on the lookout for a old no fence lower to complete the slab side look.
Then of course you'll need another upper for the lower your using now.....
Man, it never ends does it?

nice job, Firediver!..

BTW: Are these old school set-ups fun to shoot, or just fun to have, display, and grope over?

Especially curious about the original M16's. Are they a blast to shoot today, or are they a distant second to modern designs?

not intended as a hijack- but since we were reminiscing, WTH?..

Thanks folks for taking the time to look.

To me, the SP-1 & M-16 is an American classic.  Everyone should have one.

Gunslinger,

I saw this thread about the old school lowers and uppers.  ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=118&t=222096

(this is my first time trying insert a link. I hope it works)

No, it never ends.  Now I'm thinking about building an old school XM-177 clone.

Damn BRD.

Redfisher,

I built this rifle so I can have a plain Jane AR that I can shoot and not have some techno zombie zapping, SHTF, TEOTWAWKI, CQB, Homeland Defense, uber tactical set up.  To me, it's kind of a getting back to basics kind of thing.  I had a lot of fun shooting it for the first time last weekend.
Mine is a frankengun, so there is no money value in it like an original SP-1  , it's a shooter.  The value I get is the fun shooting it .

I wouldn't call it a "distant second to modern design".  My barrel is a 1/12  twist, so there is a very good chance that it will not stabilize any thing over 55 gr.

I have what is essentially a duplicate....later Air Force M16 upper with birdcage FS on an Oly lower with A1 stock and grip.  As far a shooting enjoyment, it's great fun if you like basic rifles (I do) and it's also educational as an example of the early days of AR's.  I have a 16 inch A2 that serves as a primary home defense rifle if needed, but the light weight and balance of this one would make it equally as effective.  While I appreciate the CQB and all around capabilities of the new space guns, it's still fun to take a classic to the range.
