My humble 6.8 SPC beginning

Really like the color of the Mil Spec Grey/OD that KG Coatings offer, so I am going to hit the Troy Rail with it as well and change the furniture to black.

Nice.

Still waiting for the ammo thing to clear up.  I'm patient.

What is the difference in size between a USGI 30rnd 5.56 magazine and a PRI 25rnd 6.8 SPC magazine? I was wanting to buy a tactical vest that has 3 pouches on the chest that hold two 30rnd AR-15 mags apiece. Does anyone have a picture of the two mags side by side. I was also wanting to know if all of the new PRI mags with blue followers have the "PRI 6.8mm" laser etching or just the 15rnd mags. Also whats the deal with PRI's military floor plates, can you remove them and add the Magpul Ranger Plates?
-Thanx in Advance, Bub-

USGI 30 vs PRI 25
[ link to LARGER image ]

I believe PRI "military floorplate" models cannot accept a Ranger plate.
The other ones can with little or no modification.

Zak,
I'm guessing the one on the left with the ranger plate is .223 and the one on the right with the red magpul follower  is 6.8 SPC. They look just about identical in size. Thanx for the reply.

The PRi 6.8 SPC mags have steel bodies. USGI 5.56 are aluminum.

The aluminum body mags bulge with 6.8 SPC rounds in them and won't fit.

The PRi 6.8 SPC mags will fit in AR15 pouches.

Do any of you have a 25rnd PRI magazine with blue magpul follower that has "6.8mm PRI" laser etched on it?

Sorry, all mine are from 2004 with prototype Magpul followers I dremeled and added myself.

My 4 PRi mags have the red follower - I was told the only difference between them and the blue followers are the color.

Thanx for the reply Zak. Do you know which out of these 2 rounds has the best external and terminal ballistics; Hornady 110-gr VMAX or Barnes 110-gr TSX?
Link Posted: 7/5/2005 6:16:56 PM EDT
[#16]
Red followers signify 5.56 and Blue followers signify 6.8 SPC.

[#17]
Bub,

The BC of the VMAX is higher than the BC of the TSX.     I would guess they can be fired at about the same velocity.  Unless the TSX is much shorter than the VMAX, that should be true.  Those aspects together would lead to the VMAX having better external ballistics.

The 110gr VMAX exhibits near idea terminal ballistics for self-defense / against humans in the calibrated ballistic gel.  I don't know of specific data for the 110gr TSX except that based on its performance in other calibers, one would expect more penetration and less fragmentation which means terminal effects you want in deer-sized game animals, not humans.  The Barnes bullets are not known for particular good barrier penetration due to petal deformation/peeling, if I remember correctly.

As for red vs. blue followers-- with all the variants of followers out there, such a definite statement as all blue followers are for 6.8 is incorrect.  E.g. I have in my hands a 5.56 follower that is blue.     The original use of Magpul followers in the PRI 6.8 mags was by me back in 2004, and you can find the original post in the first 6.8SPC FAQ thread.   Subsequently, Magpul supplied followers to PRI and they have milled down the first-round platform for the larger diameter of the 6.8SPC case.   I am using red followers with no first-round-platform modifications and they work fine.

Umm, is there a reason you are bumping all your threads twice daily?
Link Posted: 7/6/2005 3:35:41 PM EDT
[#24]
Yeah, so people post more info before it gets deleted. Is that wrong to do? All the dealers in equipment exchange do it. Besides this isn't even my thread.
Link Posted: 7/6/2005 3:38:16 PM EDT
[#25]
In the EE, bumping is restricted to once every two days, and that's not really a discussion forum.

It's bad form to bump your interested threads for no reason, ie, no new info to post, etc.   More than once a day is overboard.

Threads don't get deleted anyway, they live here for 3 months and then retire to the archive server.

Anybody tried .223 ammo in the PRI 6.8 mag?
Link Posted: 7/7/2005 6:34:15 AM EDT
[#29]
Hello again all......long time -no post. I have PRI mags...6.8....all have RED followers. I built an upper with a M1-S M4 profile barrrel, DD 7" FFT, WOA bolt/barrier. It works well. I replaced all mag springs with wolf EPS', Including "H" buffer and Wolf EP buffer spring. This seems to slow cycling and smooth feeding.

I have.  They run fine, but the rounds look a little funny in the mag.  I worry that with field use the rounds my pop past the wider feed lips.

Thanks, Stephen.  I've got two 6.8 mags but haven't tried to run any .223 ammo through them yet.  It's really a non-issue anyway, as I have a big box full of .223 mags.

On another note, I visited Ameetec Arms in Gilbert yesterday.  It's a nice little shop.  Scott told me that they will soon be selling 6.8 ammo that's made by a guy over at the Scottsdale Gun Club using .30 Remington brass.  Scott also said one of his customers bought 600 rounds of this ammo and ran all of it through his Ameetec 6.8 with good results.

I have also run 5.56MM with my 6.8SPC mags (~500rnd)and they ran 100%. But it too low a round count and sample to draw any conclusion with. This was with both their original mag body replacement  kits (prior to the ban dying) and new PRI 6.8 SPC mags.

Is your 468 an upper conversion? The lower doesn't have the Barrett logo laser etched on the right magwell.

I know I might as well ask for your first born, but I was wondering if
anyone out there has any spare 6.8 cases they would like to part with.
New ones would be nice, but once-fired will work provided they are not
too banged up and reloadable. I only need about 10 to replace the ones
that were unreloadable. Please contact me off-list. Thanks!

P.S.  I have a new full-length gas tube I will trade for 25 new cases.  Thanks!

you need to get a form and trim die from midway+30 rem. brass from graf and sons. I made 100 6.8s  in 2 hours, if you can reload ,you can make them easy. The reformed brass worked great in my m-4 car 16". I have loaded some of them 6 times for test loads , just had to trim them 2 times back to 1.676 its easy.

Do you have to fire form them to bump the shoulder out?  If so how do you go about that?

This sucks.  I was not expecting to be a wild cat guy when I bought my 6.8.

I just full length resize after form and trim stage with the lube still on the case, then wipe them off , trim to 1.676. Debur the case mouth and load. I have a rcbs full length die, make sure to run the case as deep as it will go in to the die to set the shoulder back ,so it will chamber easy.

Thanks.  I have the form die but I havn't tried it yet.  It sounds simple enough.

Brass and ammo is starting to trickle.  I'd lay off reformed brass.
LoadX is getting Rem brass in soon to carry on with their loadings.
Precision Reloading just received 4000pcs of brass from Rem and I was lucky enough to grab 300 of the last 600pcs.
Rat Worx received a few thousand rounds of boxed OTM from Rem.....  I grabbed 5 boxes.

yepper, I'd wait................ a little more.

I've been watching the situation and you, sir, are 100% correct.  Get it while the getting is good (or even possible).  Besides, this round will be expensive enough, unless it is adopted by NATO, that reloading was going to be something I was going to do anyhow...  Now to read all of Zak's stuff!

Again, thanks for the heads up...
