I'm thinking about cutting my carry handle so all I have is the site part like the LMT rear site I want to see what some of yours turned out like.

Did you just use a hack saw then file it down till it was smooth looking?

I've got a few hundred pics posted here, and most of them are done to show nice, clean, good looking ARs. Some of them aren't. |

I'm not sure if you are aware of this, but I heard rumors some companies make something called an A3 upper. You might consider looking into this. IMO, the trade value of such an upper would be drastically reduced. Why not sell off the a2 upper and buy an a3? |
|
|
OMG! if your saying what I think your saying DO NOT CUT YOUR A2 UPPER! That would be terrible!
Get an A3 upper, and if you don't have the tools to change it out yourself, send it to me and I would gladly do it for you free of charge! |

I have an A3 upper, I'm wanting to cut the handle and just have the site only, I've already put some much cash into my AR I figure it'll be cheaper and better to just cut the carry handle and save my money and get my Eotech instead of paying $140 now for a rear site... thanks for the pics guy's I'm going to stop by home deput after work and get a hack saw and go at it. One more questions what should I use gun kote or could I just use the kasey berch touch up pen?
|
|
Well its done. think I'm going to go and pick up a sawzaw and clean it up. It took me 10 cutting disc on my dremel and the hack saw as well a sawsaw would have made it alot quicker and cleaner but it'll get there. Any way since I'm almost done what should I use to kote the metal now? And thanks to everyone for posting your pics when it's done I'll post some...

It depends on how involved you want to get with it. You can go from the basic idea of using Alumablack to make it dark, or you can spray the entire assembly. In between are a bunch of options. The easiest thing to do is to pick up some spray header hi-heat paint (Duplicolor 1200 degree works great). Degrease the CCH, then dry it and tape off the rear sight assembly. Degrease again if you used your fingers on the CCH body. Warm the CCH with a hairdryer, and spray with the Duplicolor. Use several thin LIGHT coats. The next day, or later on if you are excited, drop it in the oven and let it cure. There are several different temperatures you can use, so check the can. When done, it well be prety hard and solvent resistant. It might not be as good as Norrells, but it really does work nice. Let me know if you have any other questions. |

I used a sharpie marker to coat the bare aluminum. I touch it up every few months. |

Some may not agree, but you can get good results with Alumablack. I de-grease with brake cleaner and apply the Alumablack per the instructions. De-grease and repeat the procedure till I get the level of black I need. The section of my CCH that I chopped blends in perfect with the original finish.

QUIB,
Just if you are bored and get the chance, can you post a pic? |
|
I degreased mine with brake cleaner and shot it with a few light coats of Dupli-color "Low-gloss Black" engine paint. Worked fine and was a pretty good match for my teflon-coated DPMS upper.

No pix available yet but if you have a vertical belt sander you can take the slant out of the rear of the carry handle and make it vertical. Allows you to mount it one slot rearward and a flush clean fit with the upper receiver above the charging handle. I several for the guys at work.

I just picked up some alumablack from sportsmans on my lunch break, I'm going to kote it tonight after work, thanks again for the tips...

Yeah, I tried it a couple ways. If you sand it pretty slick, it doesn't match that well. After I was done shaping, I used a rough sanding wheel on my Dremel to touch up the shape and it also left a kind of rough finish. That has been the best method for me, but it will still take maybe 2-3 coats of Aluminum Black. |

Is it ok to apply another kote within 12 hrs??? |

No, I did my coats withing several minutes of each other and then maybe one last coat a while later. Then I just put a coat of Birchwood/Casey "Sheath" on it and I'm done. |

Mine is currently deployed in Iraq. When it gets home on 09DEC I'll post a pic.

Is that a deflector? How is it attached? Where did you get it? |
