With all these different barrel profiles being made by various vendors (midlengths, 1/7 SOCOMS, etc) why can't someone make a lightweight 1/7 14.5" barrel such as the type found on a C8 carbine?  And no, those turn down barrel with .750" under the front sight base aren't going to cut it.

I think this would be a popular seller and many of us want simple and lightweight (the way the AR was intended to be).  Also, this barrel with a permanently fixed SDI extended flash hider would be the ideal setup.

Hmm..

That would actually be pretty cool.

Shaving the extra 1.5" of barrel will cut a bit of weight off.

I plan to assemble a light wieght rifle in the near future... hmmm.

Try steve at adco. He turned down a mid length barrel to a light weight profle for me.

It appears that J&T/DoubleStar may offer a 14.5" lightweight barrel.  It may be one of the "A1 barrels" (I assume with .625 front sight bases)advertised in some mag that I read recently, but I'm not certain.  When I called to inquire about the profile and FSB hole diameter the tecs that would know weren't in yet.  I will try back tomorrow.  If this barrel is in Colt653/C8 type configuration with a small diameter FSB, it should be an immensely popular product for J&T to carry.

Since all the lightweight 14.5" bbls I have ever seen advertised are .75" under the gas block, I don't understand this statement.    Besides, .75" gas blocks are much more common.

As far as "looks stupid", whatever floats your boat.  I like the 11.5" I did.

Really?  The Colt 653 barrel is not .75", the barrel on the C8 is not .75".

Maybe you know about some 14.5" barrel I don't know about.

Well, then, it would stand to reason that I had not seen Colt 653 and C8 barrels advertised for sale.

Maybe you should just buy a C8 bbl.  Oh wait, you probably can't, which is why you posted this thread.  Which means all the 1/7 14.5" bbls that you have seen advertised for sale had .75" under the gas block, too, right?

Call John Noveske, he can turn a blank to any profile you want.

If I thought there were 15 people who would buy these I would order them.  I think I would sell 2 and sit here with the rest of them for 10-11 years.

Once again, that is not what we want.

I don't think you're going to find a lightweight barrel, suitable for flattops, with the .625 FSB. The "F" height FSBs are all .750 as far as I know. A .625 "F" height FSB would be nonstandard as well.

Given that SOMETHING would have to be nonstandard, I like CMMG's design.

I ought to see if the RO933 has a .625" F front sight base. I can't imagine a Colt flat top coming without an F front sight base.

I want the same barrel as Scottryan. I HAVE seen these barrels--and I know of some that are in US military service. Colt has made them, but does not currently make them.

Who says I am going to use it with a flattop upper?

RED:  This statement makes no sense since it already exists.

Today's standard M4 is a flattop. I was thinking conventionally.

Never seen the "F" height .625 FSB, didn't know.

You are shit out of luck you picky SOB...

Seriously... have HBAR or M4 turned down but have it turned down BETWEEN the mounting points for the FSB as well.  Then it will look like a real ultralight yet keep a standard FSB.  That is your only choice other than a Colt.  Sometimes you cant get what you want for the price you are willing to pay.  Sounds like you need to pony up the cash, compromise, or select something else. Otherwise you will have no rifle at all and will have to stick to shooting AKs.

If you got enough people together, ER shaw would probably do it for you.  Call them and find out how many people you need.

Mass produced?  I don't think so.

Shaw has provided LW with 10.3" pencil barrels.  I am not sure where the FSB's came from but can find out.

Larue or YHM quickly come to mind.
The LaRue slides on, so it has to be there before the permenant attach job.
The YHM is a 2 piece that screws together.
This is easier to deal with because I can permenant attach a muzzle device and parkerize the whole thing.
Then it can be assmebled without any welding and touchup.

Hmm...

Thanks.

Are we talking part number  YHM-9377A?

By the way, for those that wanted to know, the Bushy barrel is .625 under the front sight base. But it's not 14.5", and it's not 1x7.

The YHM 5C1 would be my choice for a permanently-attached muzzle device on a 14.5" chrome-lined 1x7 .625" barrel with an M4 barrel extension.

Nothing to snag, reduced dust signature when firing prone, Vortex-like flash suppression, and the possibility of some muzzle rise compensation due to the lack of a bottom slot.

Are you sure that barrel isn't available in 1:7? I thought I read where someone said you could get them in that twist - just they weren't listed on their site. If that is the case, this would be the closest one I know of to those Colt barrels. The FSB would not be an "F" but that wouldn't change the looks of the gun (same casting). Just have to use the .040 longer sight pin.

Of course, the possibility exists that I'm simply wrong and dumber than a doormat.

ETA: Is this for a SBR? If not, you won't have the "real deal" anyway. You'll have to use a non-A2 FH to get to 16".

It's no harder to make them than any other barrel, with the exception that .625 FSBs are not as common.  It's just that the people who make barrels won't make them.  Same with a lightweight midlength, chrome lined midlengths, 1/7 twist, midweights, F height sight bases, etc etc.  For all the options available with AR's, barrels and barrel profiles has the least selection in quality, well designed parts.

Custom barrel might sound like a good idea to some but try to get it accomplished without a massive application of $$ and time, and some luck.  (to wit, the Giffmann barrel project).  There is no "er" in "custom", I've been trying to get a barrel customized for several months now and it's just turned into a money and time sink.  I think you are right with looking for a "factory" offering.
