Just to reiterate, you don't have to have an EXACT copy of a Block II M4A1 to post your rifle up here, but the purpose is to post pictures of our rifles that we've made specifically to emulate the issue Block II weapon system - if you've got a midlength carbine with an UBR stock that just happens to have a RIS II on it it is likely you did not intend the rifle be a "clone" of the newest generation M4A1, and probably doesn't belong in this picture thread.

Rifles that have no Block II components ie standard M4geries with Block I Optics do not embody the purpose of this thread and though they are nice weapons in their own right, shouldn't be posted in this thread to avoid unnecessary clutter.

Originally Posted By Augee:

The easiest visual discriminator of whether you're looking at a SOPMOD equipped M4A1 or an MWS M4 is usually the identity of who is holding it.  If it's a SOF troop, it's probably a SOPMOD M4[A1].  If it's a conventional troop, it's probably an M4 MWS.

SOPMOD = SOF
MWS = Conventional

The SOPMOD program was initially fielded in 1996, and the two have not significantly converged or crossed over at all since then, and there is almost no commonality between systems used in the two.   They are separate lines of development and evolution managed by two totally different components (Army and Navy).

SOPMOD is run by NSWC-Crane to equip SOF M4A1 Carbines with accessories.  There are two distinct "blocks" as identified by NSWC-Crane PowerPoints as the primary source of information, however, there was a "transitional period" of several years in which carbines with items from both blocks were used.  Because of a PowerPoint slide that was published (IIRC?) 2006 showing a block labeled "phased replacement," it has become the colloquial term for "transitional" configurations.

"Block x" does NOT refer, in an "official" sense to a specific configuration of rifle.  It refers to specific modifications (read accessories) to the SOF M4A1 weapon system that are managed by Crane.

Colloquially we refer to M4A1s with accessories from the first block of the SOPMOD program as "Block 1," while using "Block 2" to describe carbines with the RIS II, one of the last components of the second block of the SOPMOD program to be fielded.  Carbines with the accessories/features of both blocks of the SOPMOD program, but without the RIS II, we refer to as "Phased Replacement."  It is important to note, however, that this colloquial classification is generally limited to this thread, and others both here and on other sites that feed off of it.

The important thing to understand is that the SOPMOD program is almost always limited to SOF only, and 99% of the time, the "actual" weapon in question will be an M4A1, not an M4.

The M4 is a conventional forces weapon system, and is totally separate from the SOPMOD program and SOF modifications, though they were "inspired" by the SOPMOD program, almost every single actual item is different.

The M4 is managed by the Army overall through TACOM, though the Marine Corps also manages their own programs through their own directorates for their specific incarnation of the M4.

The M4 is a conventional forces platform, and is upgraded through modular weapon system (MWS) upgrades.  There are no specific blocks, increments, or generations, and their specifics vary by time period, unit, and MTOE.

Just thinking today when doing some maintenance on my Block II, and a question popped in my head. Hoping someone can answer this:

Why were two different RIS II’s pushed up the chain as far as the Block II M4 goes? Normal military procurement for items is generally strict and one thing is chosen.

Also, Which came first (if either)? FSP, non? Which were more commonly seen?

Fsp ris ii came first then non fsp came later. At least that was my experience in our group.
The fsp could be retrofitted on the block 1 and later when the rifles needed new barrels, the non fsb and low pro gas blocks were available.

Both were adopted at the same time.  USASFC (United States Army Special Forces Command under USASOC/SOCOM) thought they could save some money by reusing the existing barrel on the gun hence the FSB model and they preferred the FSB for a front sight.  Rest of SOCOM went with the non FSB M4 RIS II.  Thats why guys in Groups received the FSBs first.

Did the NSW DMR Block II’s use government or SOCOM profile barrels?

This was the first ever "in the wild" spotting of a RIS II rail in 2009, and it's a FSP... with an HK mag, sideways M4QD flash hider, and no rear sight. Why does nobody clone his look?

Real world Insperation for this setup as there are many variants but aside from Caliber and his has the MK6 vs my MK5 it's right there and it's heavy bitch but I like her.  I gotta order two more Harris BRM-S BiPods and 2 Atlas so this one will have an Atlas just like below.....

Block II inspired, just got the front sight to wrap it up for now I think. Picked up a lot of parts from the EE, think it turned out pretty well.

Question for @Combat_Diver

Do you recall if the "14" and "1000XXXX" Crane serialized uppers were exclusively Colt? Or had you seen any FN, MSI, or Demco engraved that way? Thanks!

Far from a clone.  Im yrs out of the game but i do enjoy this shorter profile.  I presume it’s as short as you can go on a RISII if using a suppressor…. Maybe 13.5 but I don’t know who makes that.

That's one of the original prototype wrenches for testing. The newer ones have a different radius on the outer edge.

Send Classified Defense an email. They'll mark whatever you want on a wrench.

This is a shot in the dark, does anyone have pics or a resource on the RIS II trial rifles? I have seen the ones from SHOT Show 2006, some stickman took of the early DD RIS II, and then one was sold on gunbroker a while back.

Trying to figure out what the setup for the trials rifles would have been. I found something cool and would like to give it it's due.

Hopefully I’m doing this right lol. My first post on here but have been lurking since late 2016. I have had several clones (M4A1 block 2, CQBR & URGI) I always go back to the block 2 M4A1 and finally got a Colt Socom M4A1 Property marked rifle. I always try to build my clones as issued and add personal touches as I go. Really love the FSP build I got but Just wanted to say thanks to all for the good reads, awesome builds and thanks to @Combat_Diver for all the uploads and confirmations. I have 0 clue on how to post photos of my build but I will figure it out eventually

Yeah it can be a pain sometimes but it’s all good! Nice build! I had a Tango 6T and found that I’m not all that efficient with LPVO’s. I shoot my clones only primarily as they double as my SHTF rifle (lol). I found that the Elcan has great eye relief and is easy and quick to use for CQB. Also, thanks for the reply!

Nice build! Enjoyed seeing it over there.

I've found the easiest way to upload w/o a membership is posting a link from IMGUR imo.

I do think it's time to move away from the NSW DMR and onto something more

I was all about going the NSW route... But I just ordered a 15.1" Lilja Recce barrel, so going to build an NSW RIS II upper.

So with this one, ditch the lpvo and go Elcan or ACOG, with a heavy lean towards the Elcan.

I have to decide on a more correct scope mount.
I’m probably going to go with a KAC rear sight.

The badger 1.7 or a reptilla 1.7 is the way to go. I l9ve the 1.7 badgers I have..

Btw if anyone needs a 1.53 badger in tan, I have a spare laying around. Mounted the razor gen 3 then swapped out for a 1.7. Never made it out to the range.
