The Fedex man just dropped off my 6.8SPC upper.  MSTN built this for
me and Wes has been great.

Modified Bolt:

It is, really:

[ link to larger image ]

Full index: http://apollo.demigod.org/~zak/DigiCam/6.8mm/

Details: 18" stainless barrel, chambered by PRI.  OPSINC 4-port brake
K-G coated black.  Handguard is PRI.  I believe the upper receiver is
LMT.  Bolt is custom machined.  Bolt carrier is JP.

I'll get out Saturday to shoot it.

Wes,

I recognized the receiver by the distinctive finish, especially apparent on its rear surface where is meets the lower.

Regarding the ammo, that is exactly what Paul and I spoke about yesterday.  I need to turn most of mine into "once fired brass" by the time dies arrive - maybe three weeks.

I just back from giving it a function check and a rough sight-in.  It runs perfectly, although I was only loading 3 rounds at a time.

Recoil is not much more than 5.56.  If 5.56 is a "1" and an AR10 in .308 is a "10", this is maybe a 2 or a 3.

The JP bolt carrier ran fine.

Wes,

The Minor PF used to be 165, I think it's now 150 (PFFFT!).   Major used to be 340, now it's 320.

75gr BH @ 2650 (from my 20") is about 198PF.

I am using a stock CAR-length recoil spring in the Magpul stock.

Sorry, but I have no way to weigh the bolt carrier.  It's way over max on my reloading scales, and I don't think it would reigster on the bathroom scale.

I'd love to have that cal in my build if standard (read cheap) AR mags would work in it in any way. Or even if some affordable ones came out after Sept(my B-Day BTW) when the ban is gone. And of course some ammo that won't cost me a kidney comes along.[:)]

Cool! a 9 pound 6-shot 6mm carbine

Will be cool when you can get hicap mags and decent ammo. Until then a M1A Socom, M1A Scout, 16" FAL, or 1:7 M4 is a better choise for most people.

Y'all need to chill on the mag issue.

Check out what Wes wrote in this thread:  www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=12&t=184872

WE HAVE BEEN WORKING ON 5.56MM STEEL MAG BODY REPLACEMENT KITS WITH PRI FOR GOING ON TWO YEARS. THE STOCK FLOORPLATE IS USED. THEY USE A DIFFERENT FOLLOWER AND STRONGER SPRING. THEY WORK GREAT, TOO.

THEY ALSO SEEM TO WORK JUST FINE WITH THE 6.8 SPC. PICTURED ABOVE YOU SEE A 20-RD 5.56MM STEEL MAG REPLACEMENT BODY IN THE MAG WELL. CAPACITY IS CUT TO 17 ROUNDS OF 6.8 SPC. THERE IS A LONGER VERSION, TOO, THAT HOLDS 33 ROUNDS OF 5.56MM. WITH THE 6.8 SPC, IT IS CUT TO 28 ROUNDS.

PAUL AND I HAVE DONE NUMEROUS FULL AUTO MAG DUMPS IN 5.56MM AND ARE PLEASED WITH THE RESULTS. WE HAVE ALSO DONE THE SAME IN OUR 6.8 SPC WORK. NO PROBLEMS.

PRI WILL MAKE THESE AVAILABLE THROUGH M.S.T.N. WHEN THEIR WORKLOAD, CURRENTLY QUITE HIGH, PERMITS. THE "WHEN" AND "HOW MUCH" QUESTIONS WILL BE ANSWERED AS INFORMATION BECOMES AVAILABLE.

If the delay for the mag kits is a month or two, it doesn't really matter.  Production ammo is not available yet.  Custom reloading dies ordered just after SHOT from Hornady haven't arrived yet (6 weeks turnaround).  Brass isn't available yet.  So even if we had mags, it wouldn't do us much good.. we couldn't make any more progress.  It would just help most of us turn any of the limited ammo we've got into once-fired brass a little bit faster.

18" Barrel Results

18" barrel from MSTN.  Remington pre-production ammo 115gr.

Today was 55F, altitude is about 5000'.

Average of about 10 shots was 2695fps. Stddev = 31.95fps.

Didn't bother to check accuracy based on known problems with this experimental ammo batch.   Burned about 70 rounds into once-fired brass.

The growth off the receiver is the brass catcher from 3GunGear.  It works just "ok", but I wouldn't want to depend on it to catch 100% of brass and not jam.  It beats searching for every last piece on the ground, though.

No, it's some random plastic 10-round AR15/223 mag.

Unless someone can pull the legal rabit out of the hat, none of us regular citizens can get the OPSINC supp, either!  Thanks a lot, CA!  (It's a legal issue because they are mfgrd in CA.)

I'll be calling Gemtech this week to see what they can do for 6.8.    At this point I'm undecided on a lot of 'can' questions: direct connect or bi-lock (or other QD); 6.8, .30cal, or 5.56?   Or two?   Which to buy first ?!

Hey Zak - I was in touch with Wes earlier and he mentioned he should have PRI 6.8 mag bodies available in a couple more weeks.  Have you heard anything on the commercial ammo launch from Remington?

Shooter172,

That is EXCELLENT news on the mags.   I've stopped bugging Wes every 5 days about them.  :D    Loading 5 rounds at a time to turn preprod ammo into once-fired brass is a pain.   If they are indeed ready in a couple weeks, they should arrive only a few days after my dies!  Woohoo!

I haven't heard anything about production ammo, but I haven't been calling around for it either.    I am much more interested in when I can buy new brass in 1000's.

As for the suppressor:   Troy Industries has their CQB-SPC in 6.8.  It connects with their own f/h-sleeve combo for $880.    Steve said he could build a longer (10") SOPDMOD version for an extra $20 or so.  Extra muzzle attachment kits are $125.

I'll post here what I find out from Gemtech.

I like the 16" upper pcurtis!

Is it possible to install a regular AR15 front sight on a barrel like yours, or does one have to use the flip-up sight?
