THE RECEIVER IS INDEED LMT.
REMEMBER, THIS IS X-LOT AMMO, NOT PRODUCTION STUFF, GOOD FOR MAKING: 1. 6.8 SPC NOISE. 2. 6.8 SPC BRASS. ONE THING IS CERTAIN. THE AR' IS NO "MOUSE GUN" WHEN CHAMBERED IN 6.8 SPC. WES |
|
Wes,
I recognized the receiver by the distinctive finish, especially apparent on its rear surface where is meets the lower. Regarding the ammo, that is exactly what Paul and I spoke about yesterday. I need to turn most of mine into "once fired brass" by the time dies arrive - maybe three weeks. I just back from giving it a function check and a rough sight-in. It runs perfectly, although I was only loading 3 rounds at a time. Recoil is not much more than 5.56. If 5.56 is a "1" and an AR10 in .308 is a "10", this is maybe a 2 or a 3. The JP bolt carrier ran fine. -z |
|
WSAR15,
I am limping along with standard mags for the time being. -z |
|
Do the std mags work OK?
I read somewhere thet somediby (MSTN or CMMG - I cannot remember) were working on replacement bodies. Do you know anything about it? |
|
WHAT IS THE WEIGHT OF YOUR J-P BOLT CARRIER? STOCK RECOIL SPRING?
LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT THE IPSC "POWER ( I.E., MOMENTUM) FACTORS": YOUR 18" 6.8 SPC IS CLOSE TO 320 WITH THAT AMMO. MAJOR!!! THE 5.56MM OUT OF AN 18" BARREL WOULD BE, WHAT, ABOUT 170? WHAT IS THE OFFICIAL "MINOR" IPSC NUMBER CURRENTLY? I KNOW PAUL WOULD KNOW, BUT HE'S OUT OF TOWN. I HAVE SHOT THE 6.8 SPC WITH AN WITHOUT THE MUZZLE BRAKE INSTALLED. WITHOUT THE BRAKE, RECOIL IS A SOMEWHAT DIFFERENT STORY. THE BRAKE TAMES IT QUITE A BIT. IT IS HARD TO COMPARE THE FELT RECOIL OF THE 5.56MM OR 6.8 SPC TO A .308, SINCE FINDING A 7 1/2 - 7 3/4 LB .308 GAS GUN IS HARD TO DO. HMMM ... MY SR-25K ... WEIGHS 8 LB 1 OZ WITH NO GLASS. A "POWER FACTOR" I'D ESTIMATE AT OVER 400. I WONDER HOW ONE COULD QUANTIFY AND MEASURE "FELT RECOIL"? WEIGHT TIMES VELOCITY LEAVES OUT IMPULSE DURATION. WES |

Mine looks better [;)] Wes makes some sweet rifles, doesn't he? |

Wes,
The Minor PF used to be 165, I think it's now 150 (PFFFT!). Major used to be 340, now it's 320. 75gr BH @ 2650 (from my 20") is about 198PF. I am using a stock CAR-length recoil spring in the Magpul stock. Sorry, but I have no way to weigh the bolt carrier. It's way over max on my reloading scales, and I don't think it would reigster on the bathroom scale. -z |
|
I'd love to have that cal in my build if standard (read cheap) AR mags would work in it in any way. Or even if some affordable ones came out after Sept(my B-Day BTW) when the ban is gone. And of course some ammo that won't cost me a kidney comes along.[:)]

Cool! a 9 pound 6-shot 6mm carbine
Will be cool when you can get hicap mags and decent ammo. Until then a M1A Socom, M1A Scout, 16" FAL, or 1:7 M4 is a better choise for most people. |

Y'all need to chill on the mag issue.
Check out what Wes wrote in this thread: www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=12&t=184872
If the delay for the mag kits is a month or two, it doesn't really matter. Production ammo is not available yet. Custom reloading dies ordered just after SHOT from Hornady haven't arrived yet (6 weeks turnaround). Brass isn't available yet. So even if we had mags, it wouldn't do us much good.. we couldn't make any more progress. It would just help most of us turn any of the limited ammo we've got into once-fired brass a little bit faster. -z |

bsbg,
I know. Thanks. [:D] I wanted to emphasize it so more people could figure out what the mag deal was, and stop asking, "But does it work with USGI/Thermolds/5.56 followers..." Etc. regards Zak |

Zak, very very nice looking rifle. Wes shipped my 16.5" version upper Thrusday PM. For some reason, FedEx didn't deliver it Saturday, even though the tracking showed it was in town Friday @ ~21:30 (X$#@%&). Guess I will need to try and go off work early tomorrow...

PCURTIS -
I NEGLECTED TO TAKE A PICTURE OF YOURS. I WISH I HAD, BECAUSE SOME HAVE ASKED TO SEE THE 16" 6.8 SPC OUTFITTED WITH THE D-D 9.0 FOREND AND PRI FLIP UP FRONT SIGHT. YOURS IS DEFINITELY A ( ANOTHER! ) GOOD LOOKING UPPER. IF YOU CAN SEND A GOOD PIC TO ME, I'LL GET IT POSTED. AR15FAN IS RIGHT - THIS WILL BE A LOT MORE FUN WITH SUB-MOA OVER-THE-COUNTER AMMO ( IT'S COMING! ) AND HIGH CAPACITY MAGS ( THEY'RE COMING! ). BTW, THE PIC OF THE MAG YOU SEE IN ALL THE 6.8 SPC UPPERS IS THE SAME MAG I USED TO SHOOT A 0.62 MOA GROUP OUT OF A NEW 5.56MM SPR CLONE YESTERDAY. IT HOLDS 17 ROUNDS OF 6.8 SPC OR 20 RD OF 5.56MM. THAT'S VERSATILITY, EH? WES |
|
Wes, as soon as I get my greedy fingers on it (today), I will send you some pics to post.
|
|
Could I get some cartridge measurements from one of you gentlemen? Length to shoulder? Case Length? Neck length? Diameter at shoulder? Case capacity?
Thanks, David |
|
Very nice looking rifle there Zak!!
Nice to see another HP over here on ARFCOM! GIFFMANN |
|
Here's one Wes built for me. Can't say enough about the super service at MSTN. Anyone got any spare ammo?... I heard MSTN will have the correct PRI mag bodies available in a couple more weeks.

Nice! Looks almost the same setup as mine, just different optics, bolt carrier, and muzzle device.

Would WES [;)] sell "barrel only" to a do-it-yourselfer, or does he just sell the completed uppers?
|
|
Is that a MWG 10rd 7.62x39 magazine? Seems like they would work fine. Has anyone tried a 7.62x39 20rd or 30rd frankenmag?
|
|
No, it's some random plastic 10-round AR15/223 mag.
I don't have any 7.62 or AK mags or I'd try it. -z |
|
I have some pictures of the 16" LMT 6.8R SPC Wes build for me. Need someone to help host them for me. Thought ZAK's thread would be appropriate.
16" DD 9.0" Fore End Mil OPS Brake PRI Floding FS Thanks, Pete |

Thanks for hosting. Wes & company are great. Just need production ammo. As I told Wes, the Chief (wife) continues "fondling" this one, I going to have get a 2nd one from Wes.

Now, all you guys who got the 2-port brake and collar, I expect to see an OPSINC can attached!
-z |
|
Unless someone can pull the legal rabit out of the hat, none of us regular citizens can get the OPSINC supp, either! Thanks a lot, CA! (It's a legal issue because they are mfgrd in CA.)
I'll be calling Gemtech this week to see what they can do for 6.8. At this point I'm undecided on a lot of 'can' questions: direct connect or bi-lock (or other QD); 6.8, .30cal, or 5.56? Or two? Which to buy first ?! -z |
|
Hey Zak - I was in touch with Wes earlier and he mentioned he should have PRI 6.8 mag bodies available in a couple more weeks. Have you heard anything on the commercial ammo launch from Remington?
Keep us posted if you pick up a can - love to hear what you work out. |

Shooter172,
That is EXCELLENT news on the mags. I've stopped bugging Wes every 5 days about them. :D Loading 5 rounds at a time to turn preprod ammo into once-fired brass is a pain. If they are indeed ready in a couple weeks, they should arrive only a few days after my dies! Woohoo! I haven't heard anything about production ammo, but I haven't been calling around for it either. I am much more interested in when I can buy new brass in 1000's. As for the suppressor: Troy Industries has their CQB-SPC in 6.8. It connects with their own f/h-sleeve combo for $880. Steve said he could build a longer (10") SOPDMOD version for an extra $20 or so. Extra muzzle attachment kits are $125. I'll post here what I find out from Gemtech. -z |
|
DAMN!!!
I wasn't all that interested in the 6.8 until I read THIS thread. Nice uppers, guys! |
|
Wes builds a very nice upper, almost too pretty to shoot[}:)] Notice almost[:D]

Shooter172
Unfortunately no, all I can do is airgun it right now. I'm still waiting on ammo and dies, same as you and Zak. Hopefully, just like mags, soon. Pete |
|
I like the 16" upper pcurtis!
Is it possible to install a regular AR15 front sight on a barrel like yours, or does one have to use the flip-up sight? |

WE DO NOT OFFER THE 6.8 SPC WITH A FIXED FRONT, NOR DOES BARRETT.
