I think they are both pretty much even as far as performance.  I think the phantom is purdier.

Having said that, I am using a Vortex for my next build.

The Phantom just seems built stronger - I prefer less angles/edges, etc.  Plus, now that Bushmaster offers a 5-ported one with a closed bottom slot, it's FS perfection!

Based on everything I've read on the subject:

The Vortex is THE best at eliminating flash.  The Phantom is a very close second.

The Vortex costs more than the Phantom.

Some guys don't like the open tines on the Vortex because they could get hung up on stuff.

The closed bottom of the Phantom will kick up less dust/dirt than the Vortex in the prone position.

The Vortex does not need to be indexed; just hand tighten it and it will actually get tighter while shooting.

Some older Vortex FSs were machined improperly, which caused some of them to mushroom the tines.  This is NOT a problem on the newer models.  There were also so Vortex kncok-offs at gun shows that failed in the same way.

Okay, what did I miss?

I vote Vortex.

I think that pretty much sums it up.

I'm pretty much against prongs on the end of anything!

Dang there seems to be a Vortex vs Phantom poll on every AR discussion forum

I like the 5C2 Phantom. Nothing to snag and helps eliminate dust sig. when shooting prone.

I likes me some Vortex. I don't think there's any issues with one being stronger than the other. Yes the Vortex is 4 prongs, but they are pretty thick prongs. I know there's the chance of the Vortex getting caught on things cause of the open ends, but I have mine on a 14.5 rather than the 20s they had in Vietnam. But, most of all, I think that Vortex looks the coolest out of all the muzzle devices.

Prongs are good attention getters when poked into the sternum!  "I said BACK UP!"

I voted for the Phantom.  I really hate getting the prongs of the Vortex caught on the bamboo in my back yard

OK, new question. I see now that there is both the smooth front (#5C1), and bladed front (#5C2)versions of the Phantom out with the closed bottom. I mistakenly thought that only the smooth front was available. Which is the preference between the two?

Hawkeye, I have to go with the 5C2 on this one!  In fact, I think I'm going to order one when I call Bushmaster next week

Prongs and Assholes should not be used in the same conversation.
