Have you noticed any improvement with this carrier? |
Thanks for the info and history lesson. Made me think twice on my choice(s) of carriers. Your above statement is dead on, but contrary to the "as good as" thinking that seems to be embedded in many around here. IMO, FWIW, YMMV.......................................... |
While all carriers appear to be of the S/A design, it appears that the older Young carrier has more meat at the back. And it seems to loose more and more as it evolves. Is there a reason for that? Do they all weigh the same?
EXCELLENT OBSERVATION, AND ONE I MYSELF HAD NEVER MADE.
I JUST WEIGHED: LMT F/A BCG YOUNG MFG SEMI N/M BCG LBC N/M SEMI BCG ALL THREE WEIGH IN AT 11.6 OZ. THE NEW DESIGN YOUNG MFG N/M CARRIER WEIGHS IN AT 0.2 OZ LESS. WES GRANT M.S.T.N. |
So which one am I getting in my build...... Awesome stuff by the way.
WES,
Thanks for the info and pictures. What is the finish used on these? |
SARYAN - WHICHEVER ONE YOU PREFER, THE LBC OR THE NEW YOUNG MFG STYLE. NO, YOU CAN'T HAVE MY OLD, ORIGINAL YOUNG MFG N/M UNIT !!!
STICKMAN - HARD CHROME. DUFFY - I HAVE A HARD CHROMED SMITH ENTERPRISES STANDARD FULL AUTO CARRIER THAT HAS BEEN SERVING WELL SINCE '98 !!! IT'S BEEN THROUGH ITS SHARE OF USE IN THAT TIME. CURRENTLY, IT IS ENJOYING SEMI-RETIREMENT IN MY RANGE BOX AS A "HOT SPARE", WITH NEW BOLT INSTALLED. "SILVER SEA FOAM" GRANITE. |
I will go with the New Young MFG style. Thanks Wes. |
im not good enough yet to actually notice the accuracy difference but there is a difference in cycling and what not. i have acutally taken it out until i feel that the rifle needs to be more accurate and then plan on putting it back in to see. |

Ill take 1 in supersized(AR10)
any chanch of a ar10 model down the road |
I think you might have to send me one of the new style ones once your done with my upper...
I'd be in for two... |
I'd be in for one immediately and one for the future build I have planned...................................well, actually, there's more than one AR-10 upper/rifle planned, so I'll probably need a few. |

Wes,
Thanks for the side-by-side pics and the weights. I'd have guessed the new design to be slightly heavier, rather than slightly lighter, from the pics. Regards, Aubrey |
Thanks for the info and pics Wes.
Looks like there's some "flat" parts on the sides of the carrier there. Any idea why? |
Hello...AR noobie here.
Is there any advantage to putting one of these into a general perpose / SHTF type rifle?? Or are these just for accuracy / precision type rifles trying get that last .1 MOA?? What about the bolt? I would think that the bolt would be just as important as the BC. It would be nice if both were made by the same Manf. (And MPI) Oh...thanks for the info. I had seen LBC carriers and was wondering what they were all about. |
YOU ARE CORRECT. DISTINCTIVE APPEARANCE, MAYBE? I KNOW OF NO OTHER REASON. I LIKE IT, THOUGH. WES GRANT M.S.T.N. |
I'm sure, but why are these the best? Does it improve accuracy? Does it improve reliability? Easier to clean?
EXCELLENT QUESTION.
THE BETTER YOU CONTROL MATERIAL, TOLERANCES, AND FINISH, THE BETTER YOU CONTROL THE END RESULTS. IF A DESIGN IMPROVEMENT HAPPENS TO WORK ITS WAY INTO THE EQUATION, ALL THE BETTER. WILL YOU BE ABLE TO MEASURE THE DIFFERENCE IN ACCURACY WHEN SHOOTING WOLF AMMO OR BRAND-X RELOADS OUT OF AN UPPER YOU BOUGHT USED OFF A TABLE AT A GUN SHOW? PROBABLY NOT. RELIABILITY? POSSIBLY. BUT, YES, IT WILL BE EASIER TO CLEAN. THE PERFORMANCE OF PRECISION UPPERS I BREAK DOWN AS FOLLOWS: 40% BARREL, I.E., THE BARREL BLANK 40% BARRELMAKER, I.E., THE GUY WHO CONTOURS, CROWNS, AND CHAMBERS 10% BUILDER 10% OTHER COMPONENTS USED THE BOLT CARRIER FALLS INTO THIS LAST RATHER ARBITRARY 10%. WILL YOU BE ABLE TO SCIENTIFICALLY MEASURE THE DIFFERENCE IT MAKES WITH ONE UPPER? OF COURSE NOT. HOWEVER, WOULD THE CUMULATIVE EFFECT OF USING THE BEST GEAR WE CAN GET, E.G., BEST QUALITY BOLT CARRIERS, FITTED BOLTS, CRANE O-RING MOD, PRI GAS BUSTER, STAG OR LMT UPPERS, LARUE FORENDS, ETC., MAKE A MEASURABLE DIFFERENCE? I FEEL THE ANSWER IS YES. THAT'S WHY OUR GOAL IS TO USE THE BEST COMPONENTS AVAILABLE IN OUR PRECISION UPPERS. I SIMPLY DO NOT CARE WHAT THEY COST. SOME OF THESE PARTS COST QUITE A BIT MORE THAN GENERIC EQUIVALENTS. FOR EXAMPLE, A PRECISION REFLEX GAS BUSTER CHARGING HANDLE LIKE WE USE COSTS ABOUT FOUR TIMES AS MUCH AS A STANDARD ONE. IS IT GOING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN ACCURACY OR RELIABILITY? PROBABLY NOT. IS IT GOING TO HELP KEEP GAS OUT OF YOUR PEEPERS? MOST DEFINITELY. WILL THAT BE WORTH THE PRICE DIFFERENCE? IT'S YOUR MONEY. SPEND IT AS YOU SEE FIT. WES GRANT M.S.T.N. |

FWIW, I run this carrier in both my 17" "lightweight" 3Gun rifle (with a non-adjustable rifle length gas system and a standard carbine buffer) and in my 14.5" Noveske Midlength barrel, with the Gemtech suppressor. Both operate flawlessly even when filthy, with everything from "light" Federal match to XM193. -z |
That custom piece looks nice, but how much does the price increase compared to the regular Young National Match carriers?
QUITE A BIT MORE, ACTUALLY, BECAUSE YOU ONLY GET THEM IN COMPLETE M.S.T.N. COMPETITION UPPERS. WE OWN THEM ALL AND DO NOT SELL SEPARATELY. WES GRANT MSTN.BIZ |
I have a Youngs NM Carrier in my M16 (RDIAS) that has well over 10K rounds on it and still looks almost new. Helps with cleaning after a long day at the range. Does he still make the M16 profile (I'd love to have a spare to leave in another upper).

YOUNG MFG MAKES BOLT CARRIER TO ORDER, IN APPROPRIATELY LARGE NUMBERS. WE'VE HAD LOTS OF HIS STANDARD FORMAT SEMI AND FULL AUTO BOLT CARRIERS OVER THE YEARS, BOTH PHOSPHATED AND HARD CHROMED.
IN STANDARD FORMAT, WE ONLY HAVE PHOSPHATED SEMI AT THIS TIME. NICE STUFF Y/M MAKES, NO DOUBT. WES GRANT M.S.T.N. |

How can one contact Young Mfg? Do thery have a web site?
Who are the distributors of their carriers? |
How do these compair to the Smith Enterprise NM chromed carriers?
hmm, bet that cutaway comp carrier might work to help some of these guys with barrels with little bore past the gas port. only ones I've seen like that before were on OAI's Simunition carriers.
Wasn't there allready a stainless carrier on the market with increased bearing surface?
Was it a JP? |
they're not SS, they're hard chromed. JP is JP Enterprises
ETA, I meant the carriers pictured aren't SS, and thought he was asking "what is a JP?" |
I just might have to try that. I have another chopped rifle length barrel in the works right now. |
the original "Dissipator" design from COLT back in the '60s used a similar carrier. They might have been on to something, it was also used in the belt fed version.
Ya, the last chopped rifle barrel project I did was having cycling issues when I went with an M16 carrier and a 9mm buffer with Wolf ammo. I sort of expected it to with that large of a moving mass and underpowered ammo, but it ran fine when I dropped it down to either an RRA enhanced carrier and/or an "H" buffer OR went with quality ammo. I was just trying to see how far I could push it. If I can get my hands on one of these lightened carriers, I may just play with that concept. |
JP has low mass stainless & aluminum carriers at the link that Tweak provided. They give no specs. for actual weight though...
FYI -- There were no "national match" specs for the M16 rifle.
JP does offer a stainless carrier.
Wouldn't the stainless wear out rather quickly as opposed to a standard material? |
What would wear on it? The exterior is usually well lubricated and the interior is roller burnish hardened (or something like that) and you would expect the gas rings to wear faster. Just passing thoughts. |
Ah, I did some research and roller burnishing is essentially a form of cold rolling. So it does increase surface hardness minorly, but I still don't think 416 stainless is the best option for a carrier. I think that chroming or a higher grade lubricational coating would still be a more logical option. YMMV.
You are more likely to drop your bolt carrier in a lake than wear one out.
Somebody back me up with figures here... I ran the JP SS carrier in my race gun for two years and you couldn't tell it from new. Also ran one in the Tactical Response carbine class (1800 rounds / 2 days), same deal. -z |
