This wouldn't be the first time a company was never told that their domain name was about to expire. The scabs get a lot more money by grabbing the domain name and holding it for ransom....

I thought this practice was made illegal a while back..........

Maybe I'm thinking of something similar, but the law I refer to was signed in by Klinton to thwart domain name-squatters.

I'll see if I can find something on it.

eta: apparently cyber-squatting is referred to a board for mediation . hardly a binding thing

Some countries have specific laws against cybersquatting beyond the normal rules of trademark law. The United States, for example, has the U.S. Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act (ACPA) of 1999.

Under UDRP policy, successful complainants can have the names deleted (which often just means someone else will register it) or transferred to their ownership (which means paying regular renewal fees on all the names or risk them being registered by someone else). Under the ACPA the cybersquatter can be held liable for actual damages or statutory damages in the amount of a maximum of $100,000 for each name found to be in violation

It reminds me of what happened to my work's site. They didn't know it was going to expire, and by the time a customer let us know, it was already sold to another guy.

The guy that bought it wanted a bundle of money ($200 IIRC) for a domain name we payed literally pocket change for.

We got a new and similar site name, and he has a domain name that's worthless to anyone but us. I hope his investment was worth it.

You might look at some of the domains ARFCOM owns as mcuzi.com wasn't always an ARFCOM domain and there are others... buying a domain that is already out there is a great way to get trafic and if Armalite doesn't get the bill paid pretty quick I would love to see what a domain name like that would sell for...

Seems crazy not to have a domain like that set up to automatically renew as a domain renewal only costs about $9/year...

Network Solutions disabled it for nonpayment on Christmas Day. Last week I called 1-800-336-0184 to let them know, but the guy I talked to didn't believe me since "it worked fine for him." He was rather a jerk about it. I also left a message on extension zero (their general delivery box), and apparently they haven't bothered to check their messages.z

ETA: Notice how Network Solutions (aka VeriSign) has hijacked their domain name. They have a government-granted monopoly, and they abuse their position every chance they get.

I remember I was in College in about 1990 and in student Senate... I remember well being on a Comitee that was working on computer networking and we worked up a proposal to the faculty of the College that they should network the dorms to the Admin buildings...

The College thought we were nuts at the time...

Anybody go to a College these days that DOES NOT have computer networks between buildings and teh dorms?

Like I said above, domains are like $6.95/year if you renew for quite a few years... For $200 Armalite could lock their domain for the next 25 years! That is cheap insurance!
