 20" S&W Performance Center MP-15, 6.8 SPC, LW50 6.8 SPC, SAAMI Spec. 1 chamber, 6 grove 1:10 right hand twist. Smith and Wesson Performance Center Shop barrels, made by Lothar Walther: 20" LW50 stainless, target, fluted (12 flutes), with CNC lapped bores, and the matched bolts S&W was going to use. We added four milled flats for windage adjustable front sight bases and a milled flat for gas blocks. These barrels were for 2008-2009 line of S&W M&P (AR) rifles. S&W wanted light weight varmint and LE profiles. However, S&W management decided to move all production in-house. Only these barrels exist; there are no others. We may produce these in the future. LW50 solves the durability problems associated with 416R. Barrels are fluted fore and aft of the gas port, 12 flutes, with a threaded muzzle. I guess these are on 'sale' due to the poor chamber/twist rate. I would hold out for S&W to come out with the Spec II chamber and 4 groove 1:11 twist so you can safely shoot SSA Combat higher velocity ammo!!! Who wants to limit their velocity when they don't have to?  At least you can have your chamber reamed to the Spec II fairly easily and shouldn't cost too much. That will help, but just barely. Please inform both Smith & Wesson and Lothar Walther of your findings. Obviously, you have more knowledge, experience, education, and talent than both of these companies combined. Sarcasm is just one of the services we offer. Take your crap elsewhere. |

Actually, Lothar Walther contacted one of the industry partners at 68forums.com, and they are developing and testing 6.8 barrels with 11, 12, and 14 twists with the revised SPC II chambers. The SPC II chambers are already common with other manufacturers, and 11, 12, and 13 twists are already available as well. No sarcasm, just facts. |
No crap intended, honestly  ...I'm taking my time at gathering my thoughts about responding to you. I know you are just in the business of selling these barrels and it's not your fault, nor is it Lothar Walther as they were just contracted to make what Smith and Wesson asked them to build...I just wish Smith and Wesson did more research on the whole 6.8 SPC bullet testing (outside what Remington has done) before pulling the trigger and asking L-W to build them some really nice barrels. Just think what these could have been with the correct chamber/twist combination. S&W is just the major player that could have started the ball rolling with their Performance Center getting the cutting edge equipment out to the public. Instead, it appears that they put their blinders on and brought something to market without due diligence...You would think that their Performance Center would be up on what works the best. It's just hard to leave 300fps on the table, especially if you call yourself 'Performance Center'. I really wish that Smith and Wesson, or at least their Performance Center, would read this thread. They can act on this information or not. It would be just nice to know that they really do care about their reputation for producing cutting edge performance guns for the general public. I think that Cohibra45 post is right on the money. The forum purpose is for Indusrty Partners to announce new products and also that members reply with their opinions and comments of the products. The comments made by Cohibra45 are facts about the product being offered. The vendor could benefit from the information being offered to make a better product. If the vendor dont like the comments, he should post en the EE, not here. |
