VLTOR IS SWITCHING OVER TO FORGINGS FOR THEIR UPPER RECEIVERS. WHILE THEIR BILLET RECEIVERS ARE STIFFER THAN A CONVENTIONAL FORGED RECEIVER, THEIR NEW FORGED MUR IS STIFFER YET, BASED ON TESTING THEY'VE DONE. INTERESTINGLY, EVEN THOUGH THE FORGED AND THE BILLET RECEIVER ARE DIMENSIONALLY IDENTICAL, THE FORGED RECEIVER WEIGHS 0.4 OUNCES MORE.
IT'S NOT EASY TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO, VISUALLY. THE FORGED RECEIVER LOOKS LIKE IT HAS WHAT A CUSTOM 1911 BUILDER WOULD CALL A LIGHT "CARRY MELT" ON THE CONTOURS ON EITHER SIDE. THE FORGED RECEIVER IS THE TOP ONE:  FORGED:  BILLET:  MY FIRST BUILD WITH THE FORGED MUR:    SO, NOW WE HAVE A STIFFER RECEIVER, YET STILL STRAIGHT AND TRUE. LIFE IS GOOD! I have a billet MUR, and I think it is perfect in every way. I just wanted to know would anyone notice any great advantage between the forged, and billet. Is the added stiffness really even going to be noticeable? |

modularity. so you can give the consumer a choice of shell deflector only, or shell deflector and forward assist without two different forgings. |

WHAT YOU MEAN IS THE BILLET PICTURE LOOKS BETTER. WHILE I DO HAVE A DECENT CAMERA, WHAT I'VE SHOWN YOU IS NOTHING MORE THAN A FEW SNAPSHOTS. THE TWO LOOK MUCH MORE ALIKE THAN DIFFERENT WHEN YOU HOLD THEM IN YOUR HANDS. FORGED: BILLET: THE BILLET EDGES ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RECEIVER ARE SHARPER, MORE CLEARLY DEFINED. THE FORGED DESIGN IS SUBTLY DIFFERENT UP FORWARD, JUST AFT OF THE THREADS, AS A COMPARISON OF THE PIX WILL REVEAL. has there been testing done on this receiver stiffness? I would like to see that for sure. "The difference in strength between a forged and billet receiver is very, very small. You will never notice. " maybe so but should I pay more for something that by it's nature is weaker? Why not go back to using castings? There's plenty of cast receivers still out there. if a forging is machined and a "billet upper" is machined there's no difference between the two as fas as accuracy potential goes. Put the rail in the right place, machine the receiver face square; I know what AMU uses. Regardless, Vltor did this for a reason and I don't think it was marketing. It makes damn good sense to me, a whole lot more sense than this "billet" craze has made. But what do I know, mmmv (my mileage must vary). Good job, once again, VLTOR! You've got everybody beat in my opinion from rails to stocks and now receivers. I wish they would make some optic mounts.

I guess I'm down to two questions:
1) Would you consider the newer MUR a product improved version of the MUR, or an added option? 2) Will they still offer the billet upper in the old configurations/appearance? The slight alterations in the cam region, and more bulbous section below that on the port side of the upper is the only thing that would lead me to beleive that added R&D/product development has gone into this version. All they'd need to add are T markings on the top, and I'd shell out for another rifle to have both iderations of the MUR - I love my current one, but if I felt the need to make an SDMR profiled upper, this would be THE choice. |

That's nice. I just bought a billet one. Sorta like when I bought an Ipod Mini because it was on sale and then a week later new smaller, color-screen versions are the same price.
I didn't buy it for the billet, but just because I wanted a flattop upper w/o forward assist but with shell deflector. |

NEW - FROM THE VLTOR WEBSITE:
Since its introduction, the MUR has constantly undergone testing and evaluation in an effort to ensure that we are offering the finest upper receiver possible. One of the most significant changes the MUR has seen was the manufacturing change to using forgings; the MUR is made from a 7075, aircraft grade aluminum forging -- prior to machining, the forging is fully stressed relieved, heat treated, aged twice and undergoes a proprietary cryogenic treatment. Throughout the industry, it has been accepted that a part made from a forging has the potential to be stronger and more stable than parts made even from machined "billet" parts. The forging process is expensive; it involves the manufacture of forging dies and the machinery needed for the actual forging process – the result is a part that has a denser and more uniform grain structure. The MUR is precision machined and each part is finished and fit by hand, we control the material selection and oversee the forging and heat treatment processes, each step of the machining process is watched meticulously and every finished MUR is check for fit – this is the finest upper receiver made. The MUR comes in two models: one with a Bolt-Assist/Shell-Deflector (MUR-1A) and the second with a Shell-Deflector only (MUR-1S). Being a modular design, Vltor offers the service of exchanging the Bolt-Assist assembly for a Shell-Deflector only assembly and vise-versa. |

Either way, I think they make a hell of a product. If I where to do another precision build, I'd get the forged with out thinking twice. That being said, I'm still very happy with the billet VLTOR receiver that I'm currently shooting with.

Forever is a very long time; if the universe oscillates from Big Bang to Big crunch it is pretty much irrelevant anyway.
***** Anyway: any problem using a Young NM chromed BCG in the forged Vltor upper? I saw in a previous thread you said the Young was "beefier"; I am worried sick that the tolerances might be too close with two high-end products interfacing, in case the orcs attack. |
