I understand the 5.56 is loaded hotter. Northwest has .223 but not 5.56

Does anyone know of any difference, other than cosmetics, between red box TAP .223 and the black box FPD .223? Looking for ballistics and performance differences between the two. I may be wrong but are they not both loaded with the same bullet, the 75gr otm? I have shot alot of the FPD but I have read some people speak of this ammo with a little less enthusiasm as the red box TAP. What is the difference other than the casing, is there a difference in loadings?

5.56MM 75gr. TAP goes about 200fps faster than the .223 version.

True. and it is currently LEO/.GOV only. The .223 loading is more than sufficent for 99% of requirements for anyone on ARFCOM. |

I think its more the NATO pressure levels the ammo is loaded at. Hornady doesn't want that ammo fired out of a rifle with a SAAMI chamber. The result would be really high chamber pressures. |

XM855 Q3131 Q3131A SA battle packs S&B SS109 Norinco yellow box, etc All are loaded to NATO pressures and are/were available to everybody. Hornady could put a discalimer on the box and sell 5.56 loads to the public. They chose not to. |

Geohans might be looking at the 5.56 TAP for its terminal ballistics. I have seen a lot of comments on here how the heavier bullets 68g + have better real world stopping power. I don't know if the 200fps difference is that much of a difference. I know for 55g loads that rely on fragmentation it may be an issue. Just some questions that I had too. I am no ammo expert. Just read here and the ammo oracle thread.
For stopping power I like my AR10 .308 155g amax TAP. |

there is 5.56 red box but the .223 red box is loaded exactly the same and has the same results as the FPD. specs for 75gr red box and black box fired from Bushy 16" 1/9 muzzle velocity 2616 penetration 13.63" retained weight 20.8grains frag % 72% in .223 the black box is probably better since it is loaded in a better case |

I agree. The 200fps advantage really wont impact you unless you shoot beyond 150-200meters or have a carbine. We've shot 3 deer with the SAAMI 75gr Blackhills load out of a 20" A2 and the results were very impressive. The real benefit of the 5.56mm version is that it provides reliabile 200+ meter fragmentation out of a 14.5-16" carbine.

IIRC, on the 5.56 Nato boxes velocity is listed as 2665 fps from a 14.5" barrel.

My latest 5.56mm TAPS were going 2848fps average out of my 20" weapon, which was about 200fps faster than Black Hills SAAMI load. I'm getting a LE6920 next month so we'll see how they do out of a 16" barrel. I'm guessing about 2720-2750fps. I think this will be an ideal combination of weapon and ammo, quick-handling of a carbine with 200meter fragmentation capability.

WMHM4: AFAIK Hornady only offers one 5.56 Nato loading and that's on the 75 grainers.

Call the LEO distributor, get the waiver faxed to you, fax back LE ID and signed waiver and order.
