I'm wondering what people are in fact actually useing as their house gun and what do they keep it loaded with, also, why that particular gun with that particular ammo?

I keep 2 guns and a little extra ammo at the ready in different areas of my house.
One is a gray CZ52 pistol chambered in 7.62x25 Tokarev that I got in unissued and un-rearsenaled condition without a BRNO stamp.
I have put at least 1800 rounds of Romanian milsurp thru it that I got from AimSurplus plus 375 rounds of S&B 85grain FMJ and 225 rounds of Wolf Gold 85gr. hollow point.
Why the 55 year old CZ?...In well over 2400 rounds it has NEVER jammed or had any kind of hang up what so ever. Even the decocker works but I don't use it.
Accuracy? Not very, not for me anyway. The sights are terriable but in all probability I won't be lining up sights during an in-home self defense scenerio so I practice point and shoot with this pistol.
I have 2 reliability proven original 8 round magazines that I keep loaded with 6 rounds of WolfGold 85gr. hollow point, the last 2 rounds in each mag are S&B FMJ. In the event I have to shoot thru walls the FMJ or HP will slice right thru them and the 2x4's

Not my CZ52 but this is an excellent picture of one just like mine except mine has a Hogue slip on...

This is an S&B 7.62x25 Tokarev round that the CZ 52 pistol shoots at over 1600 fps and the reason I became interested in the CZ 52 pistol.

The more expensive Winchester version of the Tokarev round looks exactly like the S&B.

I don't have a pic of a Wolf Gold 7.62x25 hollow point.

My 2nd house gun is a Rossi model 68, 5-shot .38 Special revolver with a 3 inch barrel. It came with smallish hard for me to grip wood grips that I have since replaced with larger rubber Pachmyr grips that I like alot. The first 2 chambers are loaded with Winchester 110grain Silver Tip HP and 3 rounds of ZERO 158gr SJHP.
I don't have a speed loader but there are extra rounds readily available.

4" .357. My oldest gun ... that is, the one I've owned the longest.

It lives under the edge of my mattress.

Why? Safety, simplicity, reliablility, familiarity ... also it's a relatively cheap gun, so if it were stolen or destroyed in a fire it would be easily replaced.

Oh, and it blows really big holes in things.

Under the bed is a Rem. 870 MAX filled with 7 rounds of Fed 2 3/4 inch 00 buck with a reload of Fed Barns Xpander slugs. An LMT 16 carbine lives in the closet with 5 mags of A.E. 50g HP's and a bando of (X)M855 on standby. When I'm not at work there is always a Sig P220 with at least two spare mags on my belt (yes even around the house).

EDIT: Forgot to mention the P220 is always loaded with 230g HydraShok. I know I know GoldDots are better but its already sighted in and works well with the HydraShoks.

There are about 4 hours a week someone is not home, If you are willing to wager your life you can guess which 4, you are more than welcome to anything I have, Fair trade.

Also knocking is not a guarentee as when I sleep (work 3rd, sleep mornings) I don't answer the door. AND some of the are fairly cleverly hidden. (although not all).

Glock 34, 5 or 6 mags Speer Gold Dot 115grn.
Bushy 16", 2 mags XM193
Taurus 605 .357, Winchester silvertips
Ruger P95, couple of mags of same Gold Dots.  This one stays out of the safe because it is cheap and convenient to throw in the boat for a day of fishing.

That's enough for me to access something pretty quick in my house.  I'd rather not keep any more than just a few guns out and about because getting my shit stolen is probably more of a risk than an armed intruder in all reality.

XD45 with holler points (when they hit the BG, they make him holler). Hydra Shocks, to be precise.

If I'm tooling around in the back/front yard, I keep a 9mm Baby Desert Eagle in the car, my XD inside the front door (or on my hip), and a 12 ga. Winchester 1200 inside the front door, hidden.

I'm never more than 3 seconds from the trigger of a gun in my home. Usually <1.5 seconds.

Bed Room

Me, Glock 17 loaded with Winchester Ranger 147 gr JHP.
Wife, S&W 66 3" loaded with Speer 135 gr, 38 spec.  Gold Dot.

Down Stairs

Glock 26 with same Winchester 147 Ranger T loading.

A S&W 4" model 64 loaded with the same Speer 135 gr Gold Dot loading.

I have done enough building searches over the last 15 years to be concerned about weapon retention with a long gun when doing a building search.

Yes, if I knew for sure there was a B&E in progress, I'd rally the wife and kids and call 911.  But in reality, all of "the bumps in the night" we have have had over the years have never been a crime in progress.

During periods of heightened tensions (we've had riots here before), then I get out a shotgun and a 16" AR.  The shotgun gets Winchester reduced recoil OO buck, and the AR gets Hornady 75 gr TAP (The 5.56mm loading).

Usually an XD-40 with 180gr Gold Dots.  Sometimes my GP-100 with Remington 125gr semi-jacketed hollow points.  As long as I'm home, one of those is always within reach.  I have mags/speedloaders throughout the house.  Rifles are kept loaded in the safe, which is unlocked while I am home, until I go to sleep.  I live by myself, so please don't be a safety Nazi, and chastise me for keeping the safe unlocked.  Ain't no crumbsnatchers running around here.

AR next to the bed with EOtech and Surefire M3, 57 rounds of LC M193 (2 30's izzy-clamped together), one chambered.

Usually an XD9 on me. It's also my nightstand gun. Sits next to a Pentagon L2.

After I take a shower, if I feel like bumming around in a T-shirt and gym shorts, I'll take the AR with me when I'm watching TV/whatever. Easier to lug it around than go through the process of putting on a belt and/or removing the pistol and light from my pants.

My train of though is that AR-15 rifles are too much for home defense.  I would be concerned about the round going through my walls and ending up wounding or killing my neighbor.  After much deliberation, my Mossberg 500A is my choice for a home defense firearm loaded up with low recoil 00 buckshot.  My Taurus 9mm would be my backup with Winchester 115 gr JHP Personal Protection rounds.
