First, it's easier to just buy a new stock, but if you must, here is one answer.  Depending on how much you could find the parts, or if you already have some of them, you might only save about $20.  

I got a fixed stock included in a trade and wanted to play with it.  It's a Bushmaster stock with the full length tube and buffer, with the M4 stock pinned  into place.  I had another RRA M4 stock that is collapsible, so I could compare and use as a correct model.  

Here is a list of the stuff you will need.
6 position tube-I believe CMMG has them for $20.
Carbine buffer and spring- I already had a spare set.
You will also need # 3,4,5,6 from the following schematic-www.brownells.com/Images/Schematics/colt-slidingbuttstock.gif


The first step is to remove the stock assembly from the rifle.  Take the large allen screw off the stock.

Drill or dremel down the pins. They only have to be ground down enough to let the stock slide off.

Next, I found a drill bit that is the same diameter as my RRA collapsible stock (5/16").  I dropped the drill bit down into the RRA stock and marked the bit so I wouldn't  go to far.  Then I set up the Bushmaster stock on the drill press-DON'T drill all they way through the stock, or the pin holding the spring and nut will slip down through the bottom of the stock.





Then start assembling the buttstock, drop the spring and bolt into the stock from the top, and then the other parts from the bottom.  I found it easiest to install the nut and lock pin by sliding in the old full length tube in the stock so it compresses the spring so I could install the lock pin effortlessly.

I looked inside mine first.  The shiney stuff all the way around was epoxy.  I sold it to (in less than an hour on EE) and bought an M-4 stock.

Fixed stocks are not all the same. My DPMS fixed stock just had two blind roll pins and a bit of epoxy holding it in place. The spring, latch, carbine buffer, and all other necessary parts were already there.

Be sure to look it over carefully before you order any new parts you may not need...

How about some info on the RRA conversion?

Anybody have the price for these parts to convert the fake to a real CAR?

IE:  #3,4,5,6
Confirm CMMG sells the tbues for $20
Plus fake CAR stock on the forums for about $25

I wonder if comparable parts could be purchased from a local hardware?

+1, I did the same on my post-bad Bushy, just picked up a buffer tube and other parts, half hour job. I had to file the inside of the stock to get it to slide, but it fits tight and doesn't rattle like some.

RRA sells the tubes ( #8 ) for $15.

Can you use an A2 buffer and spring in the CAR tube?

Too long.  The stock won't be able to fully collapse.  ADCO was selling a conversion kit.  I picked one up.  All parts are included that you'll need.  Follow the directions as listed above.

Can anyone else verify that the DPMS stocks were like this?  I'm wondering cause I saw DPMS post-ban "collapsibles" in SGN for under $20!  If everything is there that's a bargain!

I have heard that SOME stocks were glued and not just pinned.

Another way to remove the roll pins is to use a drill bit just small enough to go through the roll pin it self and  drill out through the other side ( there by locating the pin 's on the blind side ) , then use a drill bit the same size as the roll pin and finnish drilling the blind side . Then you can use a punch and punch the pin's out . This leaves it with two nice clean holes and no gouge or grind marks .

I have a DPMS Post Ban Non-Collapsible/collapsible stock, and it's FULL of epoxy.....

Not worth messing with, and I've talked to one of the local Gun Show Vendors that does DPMS stuff, and he is of the same opinion.  I even thought of busting the old stock off, and just getting a new slip on, but, it just isn't worth it.

For what it's worth, my stock DID come with the correct spring/buffer, not the rifle spring and buffer.
