Ok, here is my custom long range SOCOM Diamond AR w/ new PRS stock. Money well spent! SOCOM Diamond upper and lower receivers w/ side charging handle upper. Knights 2 stage trigger AI Mike Rock cut 20 inch super match stainless barrel 1:7 w/ PRI / MSTN QCB brake. Young NM chrome carrier. Larue 13.2 FF fore end, Larue Lo-Pro gas block and Troy front and rear BUIS'. Magpul PRS stock  Leupold Mk IV M3 3.5-10x40 illuminated mil-dot. ARMS 35QD w/ med rings and TRC cap with J-Point reflex optic for anything that gets close in. (Going over to Larue SPR mount w/ J-Point mount) SPR grip. Still in break in process but shooting 100yd. .50 to .75 groups using BH 75gr match ammo. This was with the LMT Crane SOPMOD collapsible and H-buffer. We will see if things change with the new stock. |
Well, I am a sucker for something that is unique. These are unique! They are forged out of a 7 pound solid piece of aluminum. They are built like a tank. SOCOM says they will withstand being run over by a truck (hopefully I will never know that to be true or un-true!) I liked the first one so much that I bought another set and built her a sister in 6.8SPC! I will do a seperate thread on this one later.  The pics here show a little more detail on the upper and lower receivers along with the side charging handle upper receiver. The side charger folds forward flush against the receiver when not in use. These are both made by SOCOM Mfg and the fit is excellent. You can get them anodized in red, blue, black or in bare aluminum. I had the finish done myself.   |
I bought them direct from SOCOM Mfg. Actually I bought one of the lowers off of the EE and the rest from SOCOM. If you send them your carrier they will modify it for you to accept the side charger. It requires milling a 1/8x 1/8x 1/2 inch channel in the side front of the carrier. I just checked and it looks like their website is down right now. The lower also has three set screws in it. Two are for the trigger adjustment (nice that you can tune the trigger without pulling the lower apart) and one in the rear just above the pistol grip backstrap to adjust tension on the upper to lower mating surface (no more Accu-Wedge). The safety detent and spring are also captured with a set screw inside. All standard lower parts kits work in these. |

They are a manufacturer but I think they may be closing. They just did a new run of the lowers out of Fortal aluminum which is about equal to 7075 T6 aluminum in strength. I was told by the owner the new run serial numbers start with 1 thousand. I think they sold the new run to someone already. I bought one of the new ones in the white a few weeks ago and had it hard coated by Techplate in CA. I was really happy with the job Techplate did and they got the lower back to me in about 2 1/2 weeks here at Christmas time. |
Yes, she is a bit on the heavy side. 12.5 pounds fully dressed. It really makes it a dream to shoot but not carry around.
I refinished both uppers and lowers. The used lower that I got on the EE had a very poor finish job done on it. Looked like it was painted by hand with lots of dirt in it. I stripped it and refinished it along with the new upper receiver for a perfect match. I refinished the other upper and lower because, even though they were anodized at the mfg., they had that purple hue to them. Can't have that!

Correct, the new run is supposed to be space age strength, space shuttle type stuff. I have the starting serial number when they changed over around here somewhere, I will try to dig it up. I did not hear that they were closing up. That is really too bad. Guess I am glad I got mine when I did. |

Got a question for you: I really like the way the rifle looks CONGRATS! I want to have a similar one built myself using a 20" RRA NM flat top rifle..... but I can't understand why you have so much clearance between your scope and the BUIS. I have a 2x-7x scope in a Larue SPR base that is mounted on my Colt 6721 carbine flat top, and the low profile #40 ARMS BUIS barely clears the scope eyepiece. It actually rubs against the BUIS. Is the SOCOM reciever built with a higher plane then my Colt that is giving you more clearance? |
The Troy rear BUIS is a low profile sight sort of like the ARMS 40L. The standard ARMS 40 is higher and may give clearance issues. Also, the ARMS 35QD w/ med rings is about .20 higher than my Larue SPR mount. These two things combined gives the scope the clearance that you see. I think that if you changed over to a Troy or ARMS 40L that you will be just fine as far as clearance of your scope. I am changing the scope mount on this rifle over to the Larue myself and it measures out just fine. |
Yes, I see that you already have the Larue SPR on your 6.8 SPC. That's the clearance I'm looking at in your photo. Like I said, my ARMS 40Low profile BUIS rubs against the scope objective with that same set up! EDIT: I checked the various scope manufacturers specs and found that your scope must be of a 39MM eyepiece or smaller, while mine is a 40mm and will rub and make contact. (1.54" vs 1.58") One is well advised to research the eye piece dimensions before buying an expensive scope, and discovering it will not clear the sights when mounted in a Larue. I will only buy Larue. Nice rifle! I plan on closely following the example. |
