So how did this break? It has no sign of a previous crack or fracture. Was the rifle misused or what?

WOOT!

Hadn't seen that one but it'll work. We just had one on this forum that the owner had epoxied steel pins into as a repair. That was the one I was thinking of.

See the 2 marks at the top of the buffer hole?

The carrier slammed into the receiver.  Probably the wrong spring/buffer installed.  If the carrier is allowed to slam into the receiver instead of being stopped by the buffer assy, the lower will fail, even the forged units.
