Was given for Birthday a Bushmaster AR-15 Y2K special edition.

My first AR-15, infact my first semi-auto rifle.

I'm having big problems. The rifle came with 20 round mag, if I load up more than 15 rounds the gun will not chamber a round. It jams, like it doesn't have enough strength to push the round out of clip.

Also it is gouging the copper part of the round. Not good.

I have totally stripped, cleaned and oiled the gun, it has improved a little bit, but is still gouging the round. The ammo I am using is WOLF 55 grain copper HP (ammo that was given with the unit)

I see no burrs anywhere. But it would seem by looking at pics I have taken, that something is gouging the round, I see pieces of copper on entry.

I am totally new to this and clueless. Hate to be a newb, but I have only ever shot bolt action rifles.

Also, I am thinking maybe the mag is faulty too, as the mag get loaded towards 15-20 rounds the rounds point down towards the mag walls, and have jammed on the front of the mag.

Alo I have noticed some pitting where the round loads into the reciever (see pics) Could this be a problem? Ammo? Mag? Reciever? Its driving me nuts, as I have no experience with these guns,

Incidentally I have not fired the rifle yet, got to wait until the weekend where I can shoot.

Suggest ya get a couple USGI magazines (20s or 30s, ya did not say what brand of 20 ya got) and with-hold judgement on your rifle until ya shoot it.

AR15's are not designed for setting around home cycling rounds, (free-floating firing pin and all) and UNTIL it has actually be taken and fired you have no idea whether ya got a real problem or and imaginary one......

FWIW, who gives a shit if it scratches your Wolf rounds, many around here like myself consider them garbage and will not shoot them in our AR15 rifles, (the cheap smelly junk).

Hand cycling rounds is no indicator of a problem IMO.

ps - looks like someone has been filing on the mag ya got there..... and btw, I seen plenty of AR15 pics and your is first with the charging handle left in it's extended position, (which tends to make me think your not real AR15/M16 friendly) and something most folks would never do. Suspect ya just need some handling tips.

THe problem won't be limited to wolf so it's still a problem. My gun does the same thing to wolf and black hills and federal, and winchester....... It doesn't matter the ammo. Of course it only does it on rounds that feed from the right side of the mag IIRC. same thing though no burrs that I can see so not sure why it's doing it. Still accurate so I don't really worry about it.

Done purely for photos, all photos were taken within 5 mins of each other, simply to show chambering problems....

Mag has no stamping or lettering on it at all, follower is light green.

Have stripped and cleaned it also.

Are you pulling the charging handle all the way to the rear and releasing?

or are you riding the charging handle forward?

As I suspected this is more than likely your problem.

Real USGI 20 rounders which I will pay my hard earned money for have the "original alloy" followers.

Suspect this is a homebuilt 20 rounder in which some yahoo installed a green follwer "improperly", thinkin he would get greater reliability outta it. When instead all that was done was to create a jammo-matic mag, (save it for clearance drills).

ps - the longer tails of the greenie follower is also why it won't hold 20 rounds too.

IMO idiots that make these kinds of mag modifications should be shot in the butt w/ a dead rabbit!

had the same problem with my first bushmaster (first AR).  If had a fully loaded mag, 10, 20, 30 rounder, it wouldn't load the first few rounds, as it seemed to lack the push strength to push it out of the mag.

solution:  NOT LUBED ENOUGH

and I had still lubed it slightly, you really have to coat the side rails at the base of the carrier (the only parts that have contact with the upper).  I don't use CLP, cause I think that's not enough, use a specific gun lube like hoppes lubricant which is thicker and longer lasting than CLP.  put a decent amount on both rails, and that should fix your problem, also make sure the gun is clean as possible, blast it clean with birchwood casey gun scrubber (anywhere, even wally-world has it).  And lube properly.

try that.

Are you letting go of the charging handle and letting it slam forward?
