Hi there guys i need your help please.
I have an m4 carbine and have just started cleaning the gun and found this problem. When i open the upper , the spring from the collapsable stock shot out at me. This is the buffer and spring. It seems that the little pin on the part thats supposed to keep the buffer and spring in has come loose and so has the spring it sits on. What i want to know is how can this happen? How can i fix it ? I am scared to shoot the weapon now as if the spring is pushed back then it will not that pin out again with its own spring. Normally you can push the srping down and let the buffer and spring out and then it jumps into position again without actually coming out of its hole. Please can some of the experts here help me ? Thanks Craig |
No expert here.
Back the castle nut off. Then screw the buffer tube in until it holds the detent pin down. Re tighten the castle nut. |
Loosen up the receiver end plate/castle nut, replace the buffer retainer and spring, screw the buffer tube in one more rotation, retighten castle nut and reinstall the buffer and buffer spring.
You'll be good to go. ETA: Damn, Justice beat me by 18 seconds! |
you can shoot it without the buffer retainer without any problems, just makes maintenance a hassle.

Thanks guys i will try it now here is a pic just in case. Was really worried.

Ok i am screwed. It seems that the stock piece that screws into the lower is stripped some how and thats the problem , it cannot go far enough forward to sit on the pin properly and therefore when i cock the wapon, it pushes the pin right out. any suggestions ?
the actual thread is stripped on the part of the stock. |
Timing lip ? I dont know what that is. Its made by Norinco. Very difficult to find a Colt frame here.
Basically i need a new "Buffer Tube".
Does the length of the actual tube make a difference ? Maybe i can cut it a bit and get rid of the stripped part ? |
Tweak thanks so much man. Holy crap there is a whole piece missing. I think i will just have to try and find a new one or order one. Do you know if anyone will ship to South Africa? Most places i hace tried will not.
Thanks again, I really appreciate the help. Craig SA Police |
If your stock is missing a timing lip, I would consider its quality suspect and order a new stock.
The wierdest thing is that its been fine for months and then all of a sudden this happens. Cannot understand where the lip has gone. This is like the twighlight zone.
This stupid country does not even have spares for this kind of thing. There are very few guns like this in South Africa. |
Craig,
I would try turning it in one more revolution. Is this a duty piece? What there was of a lip may have worn away, if you push the buffer back can you see a circular cut behind the detent? |
I cant unfortunately , the threading is stripped. No its not for work. In the cops i use an R5 assault rifle made by Vektor in SA. Its a mod on the AK/ Galil. Gimme 5 minutes i will post a pic of both.
I'm familar with the R5, good piece.
You should be able to back off the lock nut, doubt it's stripped or the threads behind it would also be stripped |
can you post a side view of the stock? the nut and the threads?
This has the 50 round magazin in it now but i have 30 round ones as well. http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a293/craigsa/40.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a293/craigsa/41.jpg |
Its definitely stripped. I am so cross. Grrrrrr. Dont know where i will get another tube
If the stock is old, I would get an entirely new stock, M-4 stocks are surperior to the old ones in every way. there should be a way to get you one from the states. Show a pic of your carbine.
side view please?
I'm doing some checking |

Just had to upload the right pic :

LOL yeah thanks someone here already showed me that, its an old pic from September. h.gif |

Ah, IC, not stripped as in cross threaded but stripped because when you pulled the receiver plate you spun it around the threads instead of keeping the key in its slot along the bottom of the tube. You should be able to remove the stock. If you clean up the worst of the layed over threads you can screw the tube in one more revolution. the correct method is to loosen the nut as far back as it will go and then pull the receiver plate fully to the rear, then unscrew the tube, prevents bending your takedown pin detent spring too. |

been asking for ya

Tweak thanks again for your help.
It really helps. I can with ease remove the stock but i cannot make one more turn to tighten it. It is impossible. So tight. I definitely need a new tube. Damn this is going to be a problem. You guys are so lucky you live in the USA. By the way my tube has only got 3 settings. http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a293/craigsa/3345.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a293/craigsa/22guns.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a293/craigsa/2guns.jpg |
The rifle will function just fine without the buffer retainer/spring (just makes it a bit of a pain to field strip, as mentioned by another). However, I would remove the buffer retainer and its spring entirely to avoid the risk of it falling free and jamming in the firec control group.
there is no chance that you can clean up the threads with a needle file?
But hold on guys maybe i am not understanding how the gun functions. When i cock the weapon , the bolt comes back and pushes the spring back into the tube in the stock. Correct ?
Now if this is correct then when this occurs , and you let the bolt come forward after cocking the weapon, then the spring and the plate that keeps the spring in place jump out of the tube as it has no pin to stop it as the pin has no tube lip to keep it there. How would the weapon work without these pieces. Sorry if i sound stupid but i dont see how the bolt can then move back and forward without tension from the spring in the tube. Thanks again. Craig By the way i just took out the spring and cylinder from the tube of the stock and it does not cock now, the bolt just sits there and does not move forward. |
Ahhh i see now what you mean. Ok i will try that thanks. But i still need to find a new barrel for the spring , i cannot sleep well knowing that my gun is not working 1000%.
Thanks Tweak and the other guys here. I owe you. Craig |
OUCH! Thats YOUR Country your talking about. Is Chi-Com all thats available to you in AR style? |
+1 |

Don't get me wrong but it has become almost impossible to own semi-auto rifles in SA. This gvt does not believe in legal gun ownership however if you want an illegal AK or other gun then its ok. (Sarcasm) Anyway you guys do not know how lucky you are to have a constitution that guarantees you the right to own a firearm. I am more patriotic about USA then i am about my own country. To find an original Colt receiver is very difficult. |

http://www.wolverinesupplies.com/ stocks lots of small parts theymight be able to help you. Try emailing them and letting them know your situation.

Craig, Did you remove and reinstall the receiver plate on the tube? It's backwards in that picture, the nipple on the bottom engages the dimple in the rear of the receiver. ignore the red arrows |

RSAPD,
Get ahold of Dave Sheer in Pretoria. If a tube is needed, he has the capacity to machine one, or get one. Mind the gates and the dogs. He's good people, and worth the initial distractions, that are too common these days. We are spoiled here in the USA. But we share a common enemy, as always. Bie Dankie! S-28 |
