Hello folks . .

Now I know this question must have been asked a ba-zillion times but . . . .

what's the best "folder" to install on a SAR-1 ? ?

I 've got two SAR-1s and would like to install a "folder" on one of them on Sept 14 -- trunion replacement is not a problem.

So . . . .

what's the best and where to get one ? ?

Thanks  !

For my SAR1 I bought a Romanian folder from K-Var.  Two thumbs up here.

many don't like the looks of the Romy side folder, .

It looks nowhere near as good as the "Krinkov" style folder, but I hear you can't put those on.

Sure you can put those on, it takes more work and is not a simple issue of removing the wood and tightening the screw, but it can be done.

So, using the Romanian side folder is as easy as you described?  I was going to leave the wood stock on my SAR-1 but if it is reversable and that quick I might reconsider...

The Romanian side-folder installs easily provided you have access to a flathead screwdriver.

 Makes one wonder huh?

Anyways, is this the stock that you are saying screws directly to the normal wood stock trunion?

I ordered from FAC (thanks G-CODE!)...  Harlan has been good to me...  Thanks for the lessons!

That's the one!

And buy it from whoever whores themselves out the best.  I don't mind paying a little more when buying from a company I know comes through for me time and time again.

Whatever your choice, good luck soldier!

Does the folder from FAC come with the necessary screws?
Link Posted: 9/4/2004 9:37:28 AM EDT

Yes, the folder I got from FAC did come with the screws, however, they are a tad bit too long and will need to be carefully cut or I will have to find replacements.  I don't think cutting them will be too big of a hassle.

AA-OK sells the 5mm EG folder screws. Work very well w/the Romy folder. No problems w/the front tang screw but the rear tang screw may or may not need to be shortened *just a teensy bit* to fit w/o interfering w/folder operation.

The stock from K-Var installs easily with no adjustments whatsoever

I like the Russian AK74 plastic side folder.
Does the rear trunion have to be changed to mount one of these on an SAR series rifle?

I got a Romy folder from this guy.

Novelty Guns

He sold me one for $29.99.  It's a real folder not one with a cut weld.  The stock is new and is very solid.  The cheekweld is actually pretty comfortable.  I think it's going to work just fine for me.

yes.

trunnion swap, add two new rivet holes.  weld up one pair of unused rivet holes.

angle and notch left rear of receiver for new trunnion.

add hole and 'D' for pushbutton lock in receiver rear side walls.

add window in receiver left side/front for lock catch.

add pivot pin for lock spring and catch by drilling receiver floor. drill trunnion bottom, also, to recieve the pivot pin.

Thanks Campy, I am a good machinest, But it Looks like I'll be sending it out for the install!

I just bought a Tapco folder.  Shot it on Sat and it works well. It comes with a gromet to keep it in the fixed open position until the ban lifts.

Another stupid question.  Do I need to put on any US parts to make it legal for a folder or can we just install one and be OK?

[#24]
SAR1 the Butt Stock should be foreign, so 922r compliance is not affected by the swap.  My understanding is that the US parts are Hammer, Trigger/Sear, Disconnector, Gas Piston and Pistol Grip.

How do I get the wood stock off of my SAR 1.  I unsrewed the back and the top but it won't budge.  Any thing else?

Remove the screw in the tang as well as the screw inside the receiver under the recoil spring.  Hit the butt of the rifle on the top and bottom with a rubber mallet until it starts to come out of the receiver.

Exactly!! It took about 20 minutes of banging the laminated stock with a 'smith's mallet to get the stock out...After that if you can operate a screwdriver you got yourself a folder

I love my Romy sidefolder on my SAR1. I wasn't sure I would but don't have the cash to go with other more $$ options right now. Glad I saved the money it'll do everything I want it to!!

Now I just need my '74 style brake installed along with some TDI rail forearms and I'll be in business
