I have been poking around here and there looking at AK47 rifles. I checked out the ones on impactguns.com and wonder about the VEPR family, specifically the .308 version.

Bottom line, if you did not have an AK47 and you know a lot about them and, which would you buy?

I hate guns that jam,

I would buy a Chinese import from the mid 80s.  No muss.  No fuss.  No problems.  All original.

EDITED TO ADD:
Or if you want to go the inexpensive route get one assembled by Vector Arms.

I would buy either a VEPRE II 16"or an Arsenal in 7.62x39.

I checked Vector  Arms like J_E_D suggested.  That's a possibility.  It looks like they can be had at about  $400 - $600.  That's pretty good pricing. I was looking at  DSAinc FALs and the are a little pricey but very nice.

I guess I would go as high as $900 to get a good one. But that doesn't make any sense if the Vector guns are good at a lower price...

If you want an AK during this decade forget about Vector Arms.  Go with Arsenal or Robinson Arms or one of the un-attractive but functional Romaks.

where would I find one of those 1980 Chinese AK47s?

I had an ugly but very functional SAR1.  Never had any functioning issues not directly related to a crappy magazine.   $400ish and will go bang every time.   What more can you ask of an AK?   I sold mine with 15 or so mags and 500 rounds of ammo for $400 a few months back.   Shop the EE.

Arsenal Inc

Doesn't get any better than that.

Good luck finding a pre-ban Polytech let alone a Polytech Legend used for less than a grand.  Ban era Norinco's go for less but unless you like the thumbhole stocks you have to muck about with the 6 US part rule.

Lat time I saw a real Polytech Legend was about 4 years ago in a collection of gun and elderly lady was selling after her husbands death.  People that own them do no part with them willingly or lightly.

There have been a number of people who have ordered AK's from Vector on this board, none of whom have actually received a rifle.

Your viable options are:

Century Arms Romanian, ugly as sin but less than $400.

Arsenal, very nice, Bulgarian milled recievers $600 to $1100 for the Special Forces Model.

or

Robinson Arms Vepre II, stamped Russian AKM receivers under $1000.

This one usually seems to get passed up: Global Trades. My first AK was a Global Trades/Armory USA. It's beautiful. It has never once jammed (it IS and AK after all) and is quite accurate. I don't think they're very expensive new either (mine was used). Check them out.

I paid $800.00 delivered for this basically unused #'s matching Norinco last year. It's almost too nice to shoot. Almost. If you want a shooter, go with an Arsenal Inc. and shoot the shit out of it.

I agree. My first AK was and is a Romanian WASR-10. What a bastard. But, with a little tender lover and care (with a Dremel) it works! Looks ugly, shoots ugly, but it is definitely a blast.

Personally, if I had to do it over, spend the extra $150 and get something much nicer.

I'd forget about the .308 models in the meantime as they are typically very proprietary in mags and parts. Get a 5.56 or 7.62x39 version of an AK and have fun with it.

BTW, my Romanian has over 1000 rounds through it in 12 months and still going. Eats nothing but the cheapest Wolf ammo I can find. Just watch those 4 mag dumps...I've burned my hands twice now.

I am now the PROUD owner of a SA M-7 SF and two 40 round Belgian waffle mags. 1000 rounds of ammo, a scope mount and bayonet are on order. I took it to the range on Saturday hollow
THANKS for recommending Arsenal, Inc.

Now you need the expensive stuff....  MAGS, DRUMS, and MORE MAGS!

Welcome to the addiction!  You will have more AKs after you use this much!

You got one of the best there is out there.

One problem though....you do realize it will not be your last, or the only one you will own.

Now you have got it, and it only gets worse from here.

Welcome to the dark side!!

The only problem is magazines.   You could send the gun to Krebs Custom and for $150 they can convert it to file M14 or Gail Mags.
