Three serviceable Chinese T53 carbines. I couldn't pass up the Omega deal. Great guy to deal with. They arrived yesterday and I've already got one cleaned, de-rusted, re-blued, and ready to go to the range (backyard) today. Two dated 55' and one dated 53'. The stocks are gouged here and there, but nothing that bad. Bores are dark, but they cleaned up nice and strong. I could have gone with another countless Ruskie from AIM and just had to clear a little cosmoline, but boredom was setting in and I needed a project. Hell, I didn't know this variant even existed until earlier this year when I looked over a friend's collection. Will post pics as soon as I can.

I want to see one, never heard of them. Are they just a ChiCom version of the Mosin-Nagant?

To many Americans who grew up in the 1960s like I did, there is no reference
to the Type 53 other than Viet Nam.

In many of the writings by SLA Marshall, the Army's official historian at the time, the T53 was refered to as the K44.

Pretty much. The design was licensed to the Chinese, who then built them in their factories.

I would like to pick one of these up.  A 53 was my first centerfire rifle as a teen.

Should have held on to it of course.

They're a great deal for $51 shipped. I just need a replacement stock for one of them.

Is it no longer offered?  I can't find it on their site.

ETA:  Found it.  Are they C&R eligible?

ETA2:  They are C&R eligible.  $16/each shipped.  I think I'll be in for 3 or so.

Well how about a link......I got a C&R and if they are that cheap I think I need one.

My T53 from Omega.

The bore was full of rust but cleaned up OK.  The rifle was covered with filth.  The stock has been beat to hell, but it shoots quite well.

Who knows. $51 shipped is great for what they are though. An M44 with character.

Dien Bien Phu 1954 Viet Nam.

The longest, most furious battle of the French Expeditionary Corps in the Far East.

They're cheap for a couple reasons. The market has been saturated with Russian m/44 Mosins and m/38 for many years. Really nice paper wrapped m/44 have been $80 in the not too distant past. They're very common and will be for many years. These Chinese Type 53 aren't in too great a condition so $51 delivered is about right. I'd suggest you get one or two or more if you can afford it. They'll gain in value some so you won't loose money at this price. The big question is how many do they have?  Where did they come from? There were a large number produced in 1960 those won't be c-r for a while yet.

"Hell in a Very Small Place," by Bernard Fall is possibly the best book on DBP.  Fall also wrote "Street Without Joy," the story of the destruction of French Mobile Force One.

These are a great deal. Mine cleaned up great. Just thoroughly check everything on the rifle.
A guy on the surplusrifle forum found a hairline crack in his receiver. This is the only "true" negative
that I have heard about this rifle from Omega.

You're sure to make lots of friends at the range when you shoot it...

Thats the loudest rifle I've ever had the displeasure of shooting next to.

My omegas are in, happy overall. They are about 40% blued and the stocks and gun metal cleaned up good. They were full of dirt and crud. When you guys get them I would take them down all the way cause there was crud blocking the trigger. I can't complain about the price.

How's Omega's customer service? Is the guy going to have to take the loss, or will Omega make it good?

I've only dealt with him a couple of times. He's quite a nice guy. Will take time to shoot the shit with you over the phone at least. As for the hairline crack, it's a toss of the coin. For the price, I'd buy another.

In fact, for the price, I bought six.

So, $51 apiece, huh?  Sounds like a gamble worth taking...
