[Last Edit: MCDXXV]
The United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) issued a solicitation for a family of Special Operations Forces Combat Assault Rifles, the so-called SCAR, designed around two different calibers but featuring high commonality of parts and identical ergonomics.

The SCAR is manufactured in two main versions; the SCAR-L ("Light") and SCAR-H ("Heavy"). The SCAR-L fires 5.56×45mm NATO, fed from STANAG (M16) magazines. The SCAR-H fires the more powerful 7.62×51mm NATO from proprietary 20-round magazines. Different length barrels are available for close quarters battle and for longer-range engagements.

The Mk 16 was intended to replace the M4A1, the Mk 18 CQBR and the Mk 12 SPR, before SOCOM decided to cancel the order for the Mk 16 Mod 0. The Mk 17 will replace the M14 and Mk 11 sniper rifles. However, the weapon will only supplement other weapons while issuing remains at the operator's decision.

The Mk 20 Mod 0 Sniper Support Rifle (SSR) is based on the SCAR-H. It includes a longer receiver, a beefed up barrel extension and barrel profile to reduce whip and improve accuracy, and an enhanced modular trigger that can be configured for single-stage or two-stage operation together with either a folding or a non-folding precision stock.

From that distance it's pretty blury, but the giveaway for me is the position of the magazine release - it's slightly further aft on the Mk17 5.56 conversion compared to an actual Mk16.

Yeah it's all bout the proportions. Once you spend as much time staring at pics of scars, and dreaming of a 5.56 conversion kit, it becomes pretty easy to spot.

Also time frame of photos is an easy give away since the mk16 didn't last long at all.

So I normally hang out over in the Mk12 thread, but for anyone interested, figured I'd let y'all know that a fellow cloner on instagram (@aggriv8) had a batch of the Nightforce/Docter top cap red dot mounts made that were seen on the Mk17. These ones are setup for the Docter/Noblex mounting pattern, so other sights with the same footprint should fit as well. Most photos that I've seen on the Mk17 are the forward biased version, but the center mounted versions were almost certainly used as well and definitely make a good stand-in. If you want some more details, I have a couple posts on this page.

https://www.ar15.com/forums/AR-15/Official-Mk12-Mod0-Mod1-ModH-Photo-and-Discussion-Thread/118-520524/?page=1128

I have them listed now, but they won't go live until noon CST tomorrow.

https://modernarmresources.com/30mm-top-cap-red-dot-mount-nightforce-docter/

Anyways, apologies for butting in, I don't mean to distract too much from the discussion, but it's a really great community repro project @aggriv8 did and I just wanted to get the word out. Feel free to email/dm if you have any questions.

Excellent Thanks for following up with that. I'm by no means an expert on these mounts, hence why it's someone else that made them haha.

Long time lurker, first time poster in this thread.

For those of you with the 13" barrel, are you having 16" barrels chopped or are you buying factory 13" barrels? I'm heading down the route of the MK17 13" clone.

Can for this finally approved this month after buying it back in 2018/2019 era. Tried to ditch it a few times with no bites so ended up keeping it and doing a Mk 17 project instead of the 20 to put it on. Last piece of the puzzle is the different jets, looking forward to seeing how it shoots after they come in. I only have one reference pic of a SEAL using the SV on a 13" barrel but if anyone has more I'd love to see them!

This. I could never find pics of SCAR’s with a mk13. I recently thought of getting one for my 17 but can’t find them. I’m sure it’ll be just fine if you’re not mag dumping left and right or on FA. Wish I could find more pics and better pics

Can't quite tell if the handguard is aftermarket or if it's one of the new Spear-LT uppers (or a T&E version of the same).

Anyone in here got their upper engraved with the mk17 or mk20 wording on the side? I know there’s shit in the way but curious if anyone has still done it or know someone that does it with the same font.

It’s a repro Nightforce ring made by Onyx Arms. As far as I’m aware it was a one time run.
