When I had my shop 10+ years ago I used an electronic bound book AND a handwritten bound book. They tended to augment each other... and in the case of computer issue or lost data... you can always fall back on the hand written bound books. NEVER fully trust anything electronic... especially when it could put your business in jeopardy.
The electronic bound book was helpful to me when I wanted to print out a current inventory and check it against my records.
I never had to notify anyone at BATFE about how I maintained my records.
