I was originally thinking about 9mm, but in terms of magazine tube safety, isn't .40SW flatnosed enough not to caused detonation? I would love a 336 in 9mm or .40SW. ETA- I guess you'd have to figure out the rim issue.
There are some model 92s out there that were chambered in .45 acp. Used in South American countries if I remember right. Mark Novak or anvil gunsmithing on YouTube had a restoration video. I for one would love to have a 1911/model 92 combo…
If you want to be safe just go with a lever gun chambered in .357 magnum or 44 magnum. That way you can shoot 38 special and 44 special both pistol calibers. Both those rounds have quite a few Flat Nose loadings that are safe for lever guns. I have a Rossi 92 chambered in .357 magnum that I purchased in 2001 and has served me well.

Dan is right on and pretty much summed it up. If you don't reload I'd stay away from 44 mag. There's just too many issue with that caliber...

Both flat and round nose bullets are safe in a tubular magazine. Just avoid spire points and similar shapes.
