I shot a nice 8 pt on Saturday Morning at 7am.  He was a mature buck and had some mass to his antlers.  I was using a AR variant in the 25 WSSM built on a CMMG lower and a Dtech upper.

I will try and get some pictures posted, if I can figure out how.

Well, it's official.  Hunting public land sucks.  Especially without having a prior opportunity to scout the area first.  But, that's the situation we found ourselves in this opening weekend to deer season.  Needless to say, we didn't get a single deer.  Never even saw one.

My father-in-law has a small farm which sits on a rectangular piece of land.  The house is at the "front" end of the rectangle and there's a pond way down at the other end.  We went ahead and set up there the first morning but didn't get anything.  I knew other people were because it was like a battle front beyond the edges of his property.  We went ahead and struck out for public land as I hadn't an opportunity to arrange a hunt on any other land due to last minute changes in plans.

Headed out to Niagnua Conservation Area and the place looked like a damn Wal-Mart parking lot.  Didn't see anything on day 1 or day 2 but found an awesome spot if we're stuck hunting there in the future.  That first night, we headed back to the pond on my father-in-laws place hoping once more to catch on coming in for a drink.  Imagine my surprise when another orange coat started walking right by the fence marking the edge of the property.   Well, another opportunity down the drain.

Private land is where it's at.  Period.  Either that, or you have to get lucky at some public land and have no one else hunting the plot with you.  Just telling you, it was DENSE with hunters.  I wouldn't have expected much different I suppose but I was still surprised it was that busy.  Whoever says hunting is a dying sport has their head in the wrong place.  Going to try again this coming weekend but I have a great private 270 acre plot lined up for this one.

ETA:  Nice buck.

Well  mine ain't very impressive. A button buck just a bit bigger than my dog. Oh well, at least I did get him with an AR15, my SP1 clone even. I am going back out more this week but to make it more challenging I will be using my .44 Redhawk.
Picture to be added as soon as I get one.

ETA;
Jeff, Nibbling at the three hundred yard berm? All you have to do is go to the range and a deer shows up? Not only that but it shows up at a known distance? Geez, some guys have all the luck!
Very nice buck too.

Allrighty, here is the not-too-impressive deer....

I am going back for more deer so hopefully this ain't the only one I will be posting pictures of.

It's official.  I think everyone else on earth at least saw one this weekend but me.

My FAL SOOOOOooooooooo wanted to kill something.  It had to settle for an old stereo when we got back to the farm.  It killed it good too.

After bow hunting all fall its just all too easy.  ;)

They seem to have gotten the impression that I can't do anything to them past about 100 yards, so they will just stand there and look at me half the time.

Boom!

Sucker Knowing where and when they like to go doesnt hurt anything either.

Bucks sure look good but doe taste a lot better and the little dog-deer are REALLY tender :D I am jealous how many big bucks you all have there, we only have a couple. We do have some pretty darn big deer since we have a lot of farmland around, but the antlers are nowhere near that!

2005buck

7am opening day. temp 65 and windy.  I had only been in the stand 1 hour and had called on the grunt tube about 3 times and hit the bleat call 3 times.  buck trots though my shooting lane before I can get my gun up to my shoulder.  He walks behind a cedar tree and then steps out and stops.  A Oak trees limbs wereblocking any kind of shot.  I figured he was long gone.  and low and behold he stops right in a spot where there was a large gap between the trees limbs.  I didnt hesitate and let him have it.  shot went though both lungs, blew bottom half of the heart off and exited.   gun is chambered in the 25WSSM.  Upper was made by Dedicated Technology 24inch fluted barrel, aluminum free float handguard.  Lower is a CMMG.

Only deer I saw all weekend long.  I have a doe tag to fill yet.

I was wondering why your sister didn't field dress her deer, does she just shoot them and leave the messy part up to  someone else ????
My wife was the only one that killed one this first part of the season, a small doe, one shot with her AR, and only went 30yds after being hit...
My son and I never saw one close enough to shoot  We did find our first small spike buck, (had 2, 5" spike's one with a small 1" fork at the end) that someone had shot and just left  lay cause it's still not legal to tag them , what a waste ,  anyone else find any ????

Here' Hoping everyone will have better luck in the dec. hunt
