I shot a nice 8 pt on Saturday Morning at 7am. He was a mature buck and had some mass to his antlers. I was using a AR variant in the 25 WSSM built on a CMMG lower and a Dtech upper.
I will try and get some pictures posted, if I can figure out how. |

Well, it's official. Hunting public land sucks. Especially without having a prior opportunity to scout the area first. But, that's the situation we found ourselves in this opening weekend to deer season. Needless to say, we didn't get a single deer. Never even saw one.
My father-in-law has a small farm which sits on a rectangular piece of land. The house is at the "front" end of the rectangle and there's a pond way down at the other end. We went ahead and set up there the first morning but didn't get anything. I knew other people were because it was like a battle front beyond the edges of his property. We went ahead and struck out for public land as I hadn't an opportunity to arrange a hunt on any other land due to last minute changes in plans. Headed out to Niagnua Conservation Area and the place looked like a damn Wal-Mart parking lot. Didn't see anything on day 1 or day 2 but found an awesome spot if we're stuck hunting there in the future. That first night, we headed back to the pond on my father-in-laws place hoping once more to catch on coming in for a drink. Imagine my surprise when another orange coat started walking right by the fence marking the edge of the property. Well, another opportunity down the drain. Private land is where it's at. Period. Either that, or you have to get lucky at some public land and have no one else hunting the plot with you. Just telling you, it was DENSE with hunters. I wouldn't have expected much different I suppose but I was still surprised it was that busy. Whoever says hunting is a dying sport has their head in the wrong place. Going to try again this coming weekend but I have a great private 270 acre plot lined up for this one. ETA: Nice buck. |

Actually, the story is really good. My kids all wanted to go hunting with me. The thing is, I've got twin boys (2 yrs) and 4 & 5 yr old girls and I knew they wouldn't last too long out in the field, so we headed out to the sniper tower @ 5:00 in the afternoon. About 15 minutes later, as I was looking back at the kids drinking some H20 and eating some fresh baked muffins, my wife says "there's a buck". Well I turn around just in time to see the rear end of this buck heading towards the 300 yard berm. He stops just on the right side of it almost broadside to me. This is right at 330 yards. I shoot and he kicks his hind legs and hops into the woods. Well, he didn't make it 40 yards. 75gr TAP ammo sighted in for that same distance. So to elaborate on your question Gary: Take the whole family, have them eat snacks and play with dumptrucks and spent brass, but only go out for less than 30 minutes. |

I wasn't able to go out this weekend on account my son being born Saturday--I'll hit 'em hard next weekend and hopefully will post pics.

It's official. I think everyone else on earth at least saw one this weekend but me.
My FAL SOOOOOooooooooo wanted to kill something. It had to settle for an old stereo when we got back to the farm. It killed it good too. |

i need to go hunting with you guys i've never taken a deer that big
I've got 2 bucks about the size of Jeffs maybe a little smaller 10pt and a 8pt |
|
Bucks sure look good but doe taste a lot better and the little dog-deer are REALLY tender :D I am jealous how many big bucks you all have there, we only have a couple. We do have some pretty darn big deer since we have a lot of farmland around, but the antlers are nowhere near that!

Well, I didn't go hunting because I was in St. Louis doing computer stuff all weekend. But one of my customers has a story to tell. I sold him a Bushmaster M4a3 "Patrolman" model a couple of weeks ago, and he has barely shot the thing. He brought it back into the shop to have me look at the 3x9 scope he mounted on the flattop using a CMMG riser mount, and right there in the shop the charging handle broke, right where it interfaces with the gas key on the bolt carrier. I couldn't believe it, I've never even heard of a charging handle breaking there, especially not on an almost unfired gun! I called Bushy and they didn't give me any crap, they sent out a replacement ASAP which has already arrived (took 4 days), but the guy wanted to take the M4 deer hunting this weekend. So I let him borrow a charging handle out of one of my ARs so he could hit the field with a functional AR. Its only good customer service right?
So Saturday morning he's in his tree stand, in a heavily wooded area, and spots a good sized doe coming down the path. He calls her in to 50 yards and drops her with a single shot through both lungs which also nicked the heart. She runs 20 yards, but right towards him and lays down right there. By the time he got out of the tree stand and walked 30 yards she was dead. Ammo was 52 grain soft point, I'm unsure of the make. Anyway, he called me yesterday after work to tell me all about it. He was pretty darn grateful that I lent him the charging handle, I think I've got a repeat customer on my hands! LOL |

I've been hunting out by Cuba, and it sounded like WW2, but I didn't see a darned thing!!!! Hopefully Wed night I'll have a nice buck to show.
BTW, Jeff, you should airlift some of those deer my way. |

2005buck
7am opening day. temp 65 and windy. I had only been in the stand 1 hour and had called on the grunt tube about 3 times and hit the bleat call 3 times. buck trots though my shooting lane before I can get my gun up to my shoulder. He walks behind a cedar tree and then steps out and stops. A Oak trees limbs wereblocking any kind of shot. I figured he was long gone. and low and behold he stops right in a spot where there was a large gap between the trees limbs. I didnt hesitate and let him have it. shot went though both lungs, blew bottom half of the heart off and exited. gun is chambered in the 25WSSM. Upper was made by Dedicated Technology 24inch fluted barrel, aluminum free float handguard. Lower is a CMMG. Only deer I saw all weekend long. I have a doe tag to fill yet. |

Isn't .223 tad light for Whitetail deer? |
|
|
Basically, all we use is .223. Shot placement is everything. This was the first non-head shot deer I've bagged w/.223. @ 332 yards with a crosswind, I didn't want to risk it.

I was wondering why your sister didn't field dress her deer, does she just shoot them and leave the messy part up to someone else ????
My wife was the only one that killed one this first part of the season, a small doe, one shot with her AR, and only went 30yds after being hit... My son and I never saw one close enough to shoot We did find our first small spike buck, (had 2, 5" spike's one with a small 1" fork at the end) that someone had shot and just left lay cause it's still not legal to tag them , what a waste , anyone else find any ???? Here' Hoping everyone will have better luck in the dec. hunt
