I popped in to add a little more info. We still have a few openings. It has been about 4-5years since I did this course in Katy, so I am looking forward to getting back to Texas.
AR-15/M-16 Armoring Course Feb 25-26, 2006 Dallas/Ft.Worth, TX Cost $250 (Online Registration Available) THIS COURSE IS OPEN TO ALL WHO WISH TO ATTEND This is the same course that we have taught for a decade all over the country. The armoring course with our shooting course that was reviewed in SWAT Magazine September 2004 SWAT 2004 Article. A few reviews can be found here: Lebanon IN 2005 Plymouth MN 2005 Another Review Here is a brief overview of what is covered and I can tell you it is a very busy hands on full 2-days: History of the Weapon Cycles of Function General Disassembly & Assembly Identification of Common Problems and Parts Nomenclature Identification of Group Components Semi, Burst, and Full Auto Parts and Conversions Complete Armoring Disassembly / Assembly Barrel Replacement Cleaning and Maintenance Sight and Distance Considerations Ballistic Issues Barrel Twist, Length, and Choices Gas System Parts Interchangability, including Brands Headspace Firing Pin Protrusion Trigger Jobs Chamber Inspection and Polishing Accessories and Customizing Tool Options and Selection Iron Sights (A1/A2/A3) Disassembly/Reassembly Optics Etc We supply all the basic tools, manuals, and anything else that is necessary. We will also provide lots of nice to have gunsmith tools that make life easier. We will provide rifles with prior arrangements, basically so we know how many to bring. We prefer that students bring their own rifles so they get fimilar with their own configuration and modifications, plus this allows the time for a good thorough cleaning and inspection, plus we can replace and repair any parts necessary. This is a very intensive course that we cover in 2-days, so be prepared to get a lot of hands on knowledge. All that successfully complete this 2-day course will receive Manufacturer's Certification, and will also have an opportunity to purchase a rifle at a special Armorer's rate. Also make sure everyone signs up for the SWAT Magazine January 2006 Sweepstakes, as it is one beautiful SLR15 rifle that is being given away. just FYI Colt is running an M4/M16/635 SMG armorer's course in Austin hosted by Univ. of Texas PD in February. not to poop on anyone's thread.....just a heads up for anyone who wanted to specifically take a Colt Armorer School. i think the training Sgt. told me it was L.E. only, but im not L.E. and i got on the list....so who knows......but im a C3 FFL and i had the blessing of the Colt Instructor teaching the class.
Sully, in spite of the above person pooping in this thread, I'm planning on attending your armorer's course.
I don't even own ar A15 but I'd like to go. Too bad I don't have 250$ to spare.
I wonder if he'll do one for AKs..... |
Sent my registration in, very interested in the class. For my victim I have an old EA lower that needs some work, the buffer dedent pin is a bit bent and doesn't stay in it's hole (so of course I had to locktite it in instead of fixing the problem). And then an upper with mistorqued barrel.
sorry you think im pooping on his thread. i was merely giving people information in regards to other courses in Texas that they may want to take instead. a class should stand on its own merits. the Colt class costs more money and is primarily only open to LE. that being said, a Colt certification will probably look better in someone's file than one from another brand, or training group. notice the host of the class didn't say his class was better or worse. if his class is better than Colt's, and his name carries such a reputation, then he has nothing to worry about, since his class would be a better bargain, wouldn't it? |
The class is about 2/3 full. So if you are interested in attending get your registration in. We do not do AK's, but Pegomez does. I am sure if there is enough interest he would probably be up to it.

So any one can sign up and go? Don't need to be an armor or gun smith?
CORRECT!
You will learn everything you need to know about the M16/AR15. Sign up soon. It is filling up pretty quick. Have a great weekend.... |
how much, if any, of the books, manuals and/or tools would we take home? |
We send you home with a manual that is very user friendly and thorough. It will walk you step by step in plain english of how to completely disassemble and reassemble the entire rifle, trouble shooting, parts interchangability, inspections, maintenance, etc. I don't send tools home with people, but we provide you with the hands on knowledge of using all the proper and most current tools to get the job done right, give you the resources of where to obtain those tools, and warn you about specific tools to stay away from. I do not recommend the people run out and get an armoring kit, rather attend the course and figure out what works and is needed, then hand pick the tools that they desire. Many of the stock armoring kits have stuff in them that is outdated in technology and thinking, as there are so many great new tools that are available these days that make working on this weapon system easier and more efficient. I will check at that time how many slots are left, but last I heard there were only a few. My Office Manager should be getting confirmations with Map, lodging info, etc out to everyone in the next few days. CY6 Greg Sullivan "Sully" Chief Instructor SLR15 Rifles TheDefensiveEdge.com |

Day #1 down. Absolutely positively great. We did just the lowers today. Lots of launched springs and retaining pins. Lots of stuff learned. Really really great. Got my money's worth in just today's class. Sully is a first rate/class instructor. This course is HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. wganz ¶ |

Just got home. All I can say is WOW! JUST WOW!! In information overload at the moment so I'll post a more detail critique after I email it to Sullie. First off, I'll never look at the AR15 weapon system again the same. Today, we started off with a quick repeat of tear down and rebuild the lower internal parts. Then the front and rear sights. The A2 rear sight can be almost a big a BEOTACH as the woman that runs that place. Then the front sight base was loosened, and then the fun of taking the barrel off. Wrapped up with a quick run down of ballistics, ammo, tools that you may want, and closing(certificates && caps). This was delayed somewhat by the shouting match the BEOTACH got into with a customer. A significant % stayed afterwards to help Sully && Paul pack up and clean/rearrange the tables so that the BEOTACH couldn't say anything to them on the way out. Executive summary: Sully is first rate guy/instructor. This class is HIGHLY HIGHLY recommended for any ARFCommer that has one or more EBR's. wganz ¶ BTW. Did I mention that the woman that was running the range was a class A #1 BEOTACH that needed an industrial sized Motrin enema? |

That's weird. I have been going to Backwoods for many years, and she has always been super duper nice. That is too bad.
They won't have to worry about me showing back up and bothering her with taking my money. |
