Might mention to check the AIRMAIL box only if using a Priority Flat Rate.  If they're going to use a regular box then check Parcel .... little cheaper.

AND, if they use the APO/FPO Priority Flat Rates, it's $2 cheaper per box.  The boxes themselves are free from USPS.  Local PO should have them or you can order a case of 25 from their website for free which is what I do....

consider me retarded, but are we sending the package to "John D Troop", as in, all our boxes are going to this troop, and they'll distribute it as needed or are we supposed to go somewhere and pick out a specific service member to send it to?

Hint: For instant chocolate; coffee; Easy Mac; or anything that comes with packs inside a box - remove items from the manufacturer’s box and just stuff into the box – saves a WHOLE lot of space that way. Trust me, the guys figure out what the little packs are and you can literally put twice the number of items into the box that way instead of just packing the manufacturer’s box.

be sure to use the flat rate APO/FPO boxes at your post office!!!

I will be getting a box together next week, my first paycheck went to catching me up on bills i had accumulated after being unemployed for 3 months.

On Monday evening I come home to a slip of paper from the mailman saying there's a box that needs my signature.  Yesterday I head to the post office to see what it is.  They pull out the box that I sent overseas, beat all to hell.  Customs stickers, x-ray stickers, etc.  No notes though as to why it was rejected.  

Re-addressed it, and sent it back out.  Keep your fingers crossed that it makes it to the right person!
