Inspired by the rat-tail thread.

I was a BMX kid.

I raced at Southwest Supercross in Sugar Land Texas.

It seems like a world that is so long gone.  No cell phones, no computers, no parents.  We were just free.  As long as we were home on time, we could ride to the other side of the planet if we could make it.

I had a Diamond Back. A Hutch and a Supergoose.  Uni-seats, Z-Rims, Shimano pedals, Haro Plates..... all of that.  For something obscure, I remember one of the "status" symbols was how many grip donuts you had....which meant they would get ganked, so you had to take them off if you left your bike somewhere.

It really was an amazing time.

(random pics I found of yore)

A little after the 80's, but not by much, at least I started in the 80's, not many Picts though.
Started with a Schwinn Scrambler.

These are around '89.

Still have my Kos Kruiser and have picked up several others.

Joined a group in Austin and we ride them twice a week. Sometimes 30 miles or more.

Redline frame and forks with redline 3 piece crank. Suzzy sealed hubs, forgot what rims i had but they were better than average. Uni seat and post. The best part, in my mind, was the power light handle bars, they had a curve at the grips that I just thought was tits.

I had those same shin guards. Man did they smell like shit. I of course never washed them because I was a kid and didn’t care. But I can still smell those nasty bastards

Was on team Primo Bike Shop… raced every weekend!

I rode bikes, but didn't race. Went to middle & high school with a kid that did, though, and he was pretty good. Corky G., if anyone raced against him back in the late 80s, early 90s. If we can remember that far back.

I had a Schwinn Predator Streetwise - got that in 4th grade, so that would have been 1984/1985.

I ended up donating it to a Salvation Army type store and someone from the board here actually ended up with it.

Started racing on a Mongoose then got a deal on a GT. Raced that a while at 12-13yo. Had 1 3/8 rims, Uni seat and always DK stem and Powerlight h'bars with the bend in the grip and Hutch pedals. Raced a JMC Darrel Young after that. Same rims and parts. Then an Elf with bullseye crank n' hubs, same stem, bars and pedals. At 17yo I raced a black PK Ripper with white lettering, black DK stem, white powerlight bars. That bike was sick.

ETA: My sister was NBL No 1 in our state and No 2. National. She'd have been No. 1 but she was couldn't make west coast races. Point being, I got some seriously sweet parts for free to try out from her sponsors. Including the ELF frame/fork. That was a prototype and was another sweet ride. Fun times.

We were all into Bikes as a kid.  Some racing style, a lot of Freestyle.

We used to cut grass and do odd jobs to fun our habit. Many of us that did not come from money, traded and collected parts.
I can't tell you how many I built.

Going to try and list most of the ones I had.
GT Performer (Bought complete)
GT Pr Freestyle Tour (Built)
SE Racing Quadangle with Landing Gear Forks (Built)
SE Racing PK Ripper (built, more of a racer)
Hutch Trickstar (Built)
Haro Can't remember the model, but built for Freestyle,  Frame had dual top tubes.
Redline also a dual top tube

I had a bunch of different wheels. GT mags, Skyways, etc. Different spoked wheels, Peregrine HPs, Hutch, etc..
Rotors, Started with the ACS silver puck looking thing with the single cable, then we all switched to the dual cable Odyssey Gyros.

When I finally got outta bikes, between my house and my parents house, I had a small bike shop.

I started out on a Diamondback Viper (new) and a chrome GT Performer (used) that I beat the absolute hell out of.  I was never into flatland or ramp freestyle, but we jumped a lot of gaps and loading docks near our local shopping center.

I started racing NBL on a Haro Group 1 ALI until I broke my collarbone during a race.  While I was recovering I installed Profile 180mm cranks, JP square cage pedals, 45 tooth Haro sprocket (blue) and Haro dirt jumping bars.  I rode it all the time but only raced once more the season after I broke my collarbone.  Then I started dating my wife and my bike fell off my list of priorities.

I still have it.  Need to replace the brakes, tires, and tubes and do something with it one of these days.

I never raced because I always lived far from any track or sanctioned races, but I lived on a BMX bike for nearly all of my childhood.  I basically mountain biked on a BMX bike back when Mountain bikes were in their infancy.  My first BMX was a  Raleigh (sp?).  It was unfortunately stolen one afternoon and my parents replaced it a long year or so later with a Huffy from a city auction.  I ended up breaking or bending every single piece of that bike except for the nice billet aluminum pit bull handlebar stem that the previous owner had installed.  I ended up building a nice bike around that stem with a Free Agent Limo frame, GT billet aluminum three piece crank set, 48 spoke rear wheel, 36 spoke front, and the best bars, brakes, etc..  I put a lot of miles on that bike.  I wish I still had it, but it disappeared when I was deployed or TDY about 15 years ago.

I actually still have it.  Over the years, I’ve found a nice set of Sugino cranks, NOS pads, and NOS decals for it.  In a recent move the rear hub disappeared, but otherwise it’s all still there.

If you would like the bike back, you’re more than welcome to it.  I’ve been scaling back projects due to lack of space since the move.
