Multimeter question (Page 1 of 3)

What’s wrong with my multimeter or electrical? Yes, I know it’s not an expensive Fluke but it’s worked okay in the past. Shouldn’t the volts stop around 110/120? Keeps going to 199 and then displays the 1 for overload.

Seriously, though. I dont trust my life to stuff like that. Yes I have a residential/ light commercial license. At least, get a Fluke 101. I prefer a 117 or t5-600 , but the 101 is fine for diy stuff.https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01IB9S6WK?tag=arfcom00-20

As others have said the meter is dookie. I've never seen a meter with those transistor test features that weren't piles of garbage.

Also, no cat rating visible and I wouldn't belive it if it were there. Definitely would not recommend testing high energy circuits like mains.

You don't need a fluke for home gamer stuff, but you do need something with a cat 3 rating of some sort. Lots of decent non-fluke options out there.

Yeah, I agree.
I spent my entire career in electronics using the most expensive meters available - I just don't need that for my home use.
I don't have a Fluke meter, but I do have several meters that have always worked well (including one D'arsonval meter).

Fluke is of course the gold standard, but I just don't need to spend that much for a multimeter for home use.
For an inexpensive but decent meter (yeah, Chinese) I usually goto my HT188A.

Amazon Product
  • WIDE APPLICATIONS - KAIWEETS HT118A Multimeter measures up to 600V AC/DC voltage, 10A AC/DC current and 60 MOhms resistance, electrical tester also tests temperature, capacitance, frequency, duty-cycle, wire on-off, and test diodes and continuity.

Is This Multimeter A good Choice? Kaiweets HT118A Review!

OP don’t feel too bad.  I used that free Harbor Freight multimeter for years and it served me well for all kinds of stuff around the house.  I diagnosed and fixed my AC with it, a ceiling fan, and replaced my guitar pickups.  I finally just wanted something better and got a Klein, the kind with the lobster claw clamp on one end.  That measures amps right?  I haven’t even had a chance to use it much yet.

Yep.
That was the first meter I ever used in my career.
I still have a D'arsonval meter at home that I used for measuring DC uV, because at the time none of the digital meters I owned couldn't measure under 10uV DC which I needed to do.
But now, even decent inexpensive digital meters can do that accurately.

You can find good fluke meters on FB marketplace for under 1/2 price.  I have bought 6+ that way over the years.

If you’re too cheap to buy a fluke then why even worry if the reading is accurate?

If your transformer has taps then go crank that baby up. Don’t read the warning label above it, it doesn’t need to be de-energized.

My $$$ meter lost its mind today, wouldn't read ohms or DC volts, amps were gibberish. Almost ordered a Fluke and decided to change the battery first.

It's all back, like day 1. The 9v battery runs everything.

I spent my career with Fluke and better (HP Lab) multimeters.
One of my home Chink multimeters is now going on 15 years and still working fine for what I need it for.

I'm not knocking Fluke, it is the gold standard - but for most people it just isn't worth the price.

Much of what I use a DVM for could be done with a lightbulb.

Don't overthink it.  And yes, I have my brother in laws spare because my last harbor freight one shit the bed.

Lol

Harbor Fright multimeter leads are the thinnest, weakest, POS wires (if you can even call them legitimate wires) sold (or mostly given away) to the the public.

That one was pretty simple.  Just needed a good cleaning.  Most common issues with them at this point is leaky battery corrosion on the contacts and lines in the screens.  In most cases a hot air rework station and a pencil will fix the screen issue.

I would go get a new multimeter and give that one to my kids. Klein makes some economically priced models, but in reality, just spend $20-30 and you'll get something functional for homeowners.

So a digital meter doesn't use electricity to measure things?  How about turning on the display?

Older Louis Rossman videos,  Northridge fix (awesome content),  signal path..  there are a lot of great videos and creators on youtube.

I learned a lot over the years from tinkering and just messing around.  I learned a ton more watching videos on electronics repair and engineering.  I have all this fancy test equipment, yet I still find my self falling back to just educated guesses and past experience.  A multimeter with some fine probes and just past experience seems to work for me.

Fluke also makes a cheap (less than $100) model that is safe and reliable that fills most peoples needs.
