China’s first supercarrier, equipped with electromagnetic catapults and arrestor gear, will operate a new carrier air wing which includes the J-35.  Fujian, hull number 18, is the third aircraft carrier of the People’s Liberation Army Navy, after Shandong and Liaoning, and the first equipped to perform CATOBAR (catapult-assisted takeoff but arrested landing) operations. It is also China’s first supercarrier, with a displacement of 80,000 tons, and the first fully indigenous design.

Naval News was able to deduce Fujian’s approximate dimensions from available imagery. Basic measurements for the hull are a length of approximately 316 metres, a beam across the flight deck of 72 metres average and 76 metres at the widest point. Hull beam at waterline level is around 39 metres. The carrier appears to be equipped with two aircraft elevators, three catapults and four arrestor wires. Specifically, Fujian is equipped with electromagnetic catapults, which are similar to the electromagnetic aircraft launch system (EMALS) being introduced by the U.S. Navy,  according to Chinese media, allowing the carrier to launch heavier aircraft with larger payloads compared to previous Chinese carriers.

The island, which houses the bridge, smokestack, AESA radar arrays, sensors and multiple antennas, is located between the two elevators. The propulsion system appears to be made of conventional steam turbines, similarly to previous Chinese carriers, although no details were released about this by Chinese media. Fujian apparently retained the same defensive system seen on Shandong and Liaoning, made of a combination of HQ-10 short-range surface-to-air missiles and 30 mm multi-barrel close-in weapon systems (CIWS).

And I predict that we will soon view navies similarly to how we now view tanks on the modern battle field.

Drones and hypersonic missiles have changed everything.

I'm surprised the Houthi's or some other motivated bad guy hasn't thrown a swarm of 50 drones at a DDG. I don't think CUAS is up to the task yet.

I wouldn’t take that bet.

China churns out magnitudes more ships than the US these days and is matching our defense budget all while we fund them.

Given how terrible their after-sales support is of their cars (or literally anything else they make), I'm not too worried about their carrier.

They could sell them for export as turn-key carrier air wings, and it still would be permanently broken after a year.

The carrier is being built to impress the Chinese population, as well as the third world errs that China wants to intimidate into joining its sphere of influence. It was never built to take the United States Navy, and China has no plans to do that. Not in their wildest dreams.

Carriers are only effective if you are skilled at flying off of and on to them. Might be a while while they learn that part.

Tanks and Navies most definitely still have a place. Russia and Ukraine seem to have no sense of combined arms, leaving their vehicles to be undefended targets.

Our tech and tactics are a generation ahead of them.

At least they had the good sense to not try and make it nuclear powered. It is nowhere near as capable as our carriers and isn't meant to go for to toe with the US Navy. They are for regional intimidation

They will know it is there, but not exactly where it is.  About the only way they could find it is if the sub served Taco Bell for dinner or one of their subs dumb luck crash into it.

thing is, a conflict with chyna will be done in chyna's area. their supply lines will be much shorter and our carriers and other ships will be reachable for chynese mainland missiles and drones.

and anyway, the carrier is the battleship of wwII. the submarine will be the premier naval asset in a real world war in the future. surface ships will be floating targets of land based icbms and similar. a real world war will see all sides at least using tactical nukes. i doubt an aircraft carrier can survive a nuke strike.

This man is exactly correct.

This new carrier is not nuclear powered like any one of the USN super carriers. Meaning it doesn't extend china's projection power. What it does do is replace their God awful previous 2 carriers that are ww2 era soviet tech that sucked balls, and tells their neighbors that they are the big kid on the block.

Impressive.

With this most recent achievement, fate has in a single stroke, marked the decline of the west and spelled a new era of wondrous prosperity and peaceful global dominance for the Chinese dragon, which promises to firmly stand in sharp contrast to the historically bloody ascent of western powers and the cruel subjugation it brought to the humbler nations of the world. With the blessings of Chinese quantum direct-current electricity, quantum aircraft carriers and quantum enhanced railguns will be the instruments with which China affirms its noble stewardship of 21st century world politics and offers the non-western world a different option; an humanist alternative to the depredations of Western leadership and the opportunity for a more equitable and dignified multilateralism.

The US, Australia, and Japan have all taken delivery of their first bus sized drone submarines with long patrol capabilities.  Many other countries are tinkering with torpedo sized drones capable of short patrols.  Arming them for attack is only a matter of time.  I think Ukraine has already used a couple underwater kamikaze drones.

Small and electric and infinitely patient, these are going to be incredibly quiet and nearly impossible to detect.   Being smaller they can operate in much shallower waters. Without human crews to support they're capable of lying in wait for very long periods.  Without human crews and being a fraction of the cost of conventional subs even the big ones can be made semi-expendable and take risks that conventional subs wouldn't.

I think the world's merchant shipping and conventional navies are in for a rough couple of decades.  Lasers/auto cannon/interceptor drones may ultimately negate flying drones, but they're going to get slaughtered by underwater drones until there's a revolution in detection and counter measures.
