If barrel shadow from a WML can be kept to between, say, 4 o'clock and 8 o'clock, just how important/detrimental is it?

Yeah it's not important at all. When you stop focusing on the shadow and focus on the hotspot and where you're aiming, you barely even notice the shadow anymore.
