So, I took my 16" steel target out today and was shooting from 500 yards, and had trouble telling if I was hitting the thing. Problem is, even at that distance, it was very hard to hear. I had the Walkers electronic ear pro on, and I heard one hit... barely...

I wonder if it's because my target was resting partially in the ground. Basically, I set it upright with bent rebar on either "ear" and let the bottom sit in the dirt.

Would it have been louder if hanging free, or something?

At that distance, paint it white and use your spotting scope

Hanging will definitely improve the sound.  It will also allow the target to swing when hit.

What calibers are you shooting?  55 grain 223 will barely make a sound.  Heavier bullets like a 69 or 77 grain make a lot more noise on impact.

It ABSOLUTELY is going to make a LOT more noise if hanging than if stuck in the ground

I can hear hits at 900 pretty easy, my 500 yard target is hanging of the side of a pole but still gongs very well.

Edit: with 308 that is.

See, that's what surprised me. Couple weeks ago I hit at 700, heard it. This week, when I know I hit at 500 (because I heard it), it was barely audible.

this    and get the thinnest steel that will hold up to your load at a given distance.  For example at 1000 yards I use 1/4 ar 500 and can see it move when hit.

Hang it as a swinger so it can move and ring.

hang it so it rings like a bell

5.56 gets hard to hear at about 400yrds

6.8spc, 6.5G, 308 and 30-06 CLANG it much harder

Damn, wish those were cheaper...

Well, both times the target was resting somewhat on the ground, but probably more so this last time when I was shooting at 500.

Sigh... now I need a new stand...
