Just got the optic in to replace the Aimpoint for a little more versatility. BCM upper, Spikes lower, Vortex Strike Eagle (until i decide if more expensive options are worth it.), GG&G mount.

It's my Mega MA-Ten with monolithic upper, 18" Rainier barrel, for a Recce it's cheating as is 308. Until I get glass for my SMOS this is my one and only long range precision gun.

Great pic.  I really like the Holland build.  Something about them.  Now, I'm really impressed if them kids of yours actually shoot them offhand.   My son is just starting to shoot offhand with an M-1 Carbine and an AR and he's 15.    Gotta get him on the weights.   How much does you Holland Build weigh?  I think I already asked you about the weight on the one your girl is holding.  LOL.

I've used my 308 "Pig" shown above on multiple hunting trips walking any where from 2 to 8 miles a day at elevations from 6000 ft up to 9-1000 feet. I've taken a mule deer, cow elk, and bull elk with it. My SMOS build will be my deer/pronghorn gun and my kids will use their own, we need to start working on their "dope". The real trick I've found is use an Eberlestock pack

Off the to of my head my boy's is like 10.5 and daughter's is 9.5, ballpark anyways. Her SS HD 1-6 is fricking heavy.  So for now they're prone from bipod and rear bagging it, but at 5 and 7 who can blame them. This past winter my boy was shooting offhand with my SBR, and keys just say if someone wad on the receiving end they would need a new set of knees.

Love those pics Sgtbutt.  Nice brass in the air.  They'll both be deadly by the time their 12.  Or earlier.    Is your boy shooting .308?????  Wow.

My son shot a .308 once.  But it was an AR30 with one of them huge breaks on a bipod and had less recoil than my M4gery.  You know?  Your son is tough.

SAHWEET. That's a fine recce and one of the best paint jobs I've seen. Nice work.

I need to get around to some update pictures of my rig. I must say it's funny how things change. Pre NFA world obviously 16" guns were fun. Then suppressors and SBRs made them a lower priority. Now I find myself going back to enjoying a 16" 5.56 and not seeing much fun in a 5.56 SBR. Now a suppressed 8" .300BLK shooting subs is a different story but I'm always pulling the recce out.

God that thing is sweet.  I've got a soft spot for fixed stocks.  To me that would be one fine rifle to shoot from prone or the bench.  Doesn't get any better than that.

Well i took the franken recce out to the range today.

I was shooting Black Hills 77gr 5.56 and it made me realize a few things. Firstly that the rifle is far more capable than I am as a shooter...and secondly that I really want to put a different scope and a nice 2 stage trigger in this thing. Overall i was blown away with what this cheap ole thing can do.

Nice build. Snag a LaRue MBT. It's a fantastic trigger and at $125 is a steal (lead time is about 6 weeks at the moment). You'll wonder why you waited so long.

What I can say is that the barrel has not required a heavier buffer on my build, is ejecting flawlessly with everything from M855 to some lighter target handloads (52 grain FB Bergers and 52 SMKs) for 100 yards, and with 70 grain fairly hot high BC Berger VLDs for distance shooting, as well as my normal hunting (ie pretty warm) Barnes 62 grain TSX.  All but the 70 grain VLDs were previously developed in a 5.56 chambered 16" carbine and run fine in the Wylde chamber.   I have no sense of the rifle not being smooth in operation .  While it is admittedly overgassed for M855 5.56, it is not tearing up case rims or showing other signs of excessive bolt velocity.   In fairness, I now shoot M855 only for access to the once fired cases, and my handloads, except for the Barnes hunting loads and a long range VLD load, tend to be closer to .223 velocity and pressure.  I only have about 80 rounds down the new tube, so only time will tell.

I don't plan to run a can on this rifle and appreciate the issues that might present..

I don't know if the Wylde chamber or chamfer of the port had or has any influence on the port size decision.  It's running fine and I'm of the mind that it is better to be a bit overgassed as long as function is not impaired, cases are extracted and ejected normally with no evidence of weapon wear and, from my perspective, case life for reloading is not diminished.

The build, as currently configured is below, still a work in progress.

However one thing I did not like about the Lilja's were the gas port sizing. It is grossly over-gassed in my opinion and experience. The blanks were Lilja but chambering was done at Compass Lake and I am assuming to a smaller gas port sizing.

Here's one at 200 yards - a bit of dialing turrets and stuff but not sure why I was shooting up there since it's been so long. I think I might've shot out the red center and chose another area.

http://i.imgur.com/0dnJ9q7.jpg

I'm glad you mentioned the port sizing. Their spec sheet shows a port of 0.080 which seems pretty large for a 16" barrel with a carbine-length gas system. I was not sure if this was the actual spec, the result of the Wylde chamber (it has been alleged on TOS that port sizing is only one variable determining gas pressure in the system, where chamfering can also influence it; I'm not sure how true that is), or something else.

Not trying to start a gas port size debate, but who wants a $500 barrel that beats the hell out of the system? I suppose there are always heavier buffers and adjustable gas blocks.

Here's the Lilja M4-Navy schematic:

http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll201/corymclark96/M4_navy.jpg~original

I doubt this was the spec as there are recce rifles that sport suppressors. can you image a .080 with a can? lol

I had to use an H3 buffer in mine.

This is the reason I am looking at the Krieger for my next recce or purchasing the Lilja blank and sending it off to compass lake.

When I bought my Lilja M4-Navy barrel, I was curious about the .080 spec.  I had a discussion with Dan Lilja's son, Carson, on the subject.  He says they did make complete barrels for Navy NWCS-Crane, and that they also sent blanks to Compass Lake, presumably because the order was too large for them to handle on their own within the time of the contract.   I was very curious about the spec on the port.   He says that .080 and a carbine location has always been in the drawings he has access to but does not know whether this was original or changed at some point.  He says information on the original port size choice has been "lost in the vapors of time."

Follow up post.  Lilja 16" Navy recce barrel fully broken in.  Shot for group at 100 yards.  Results below.  I'm satisfied.  I do temporarily swap to my QD mounted Burris 6-24x50mm target scope for load development and precision shooting, so it looked like this when shooting on thatvday.

I like it! FWIW, if you twist off the tails of zip ties instead of clipping them off, they won't cut you. I'll try and remember to send a pic to you with a copy of the book (I have it printed off) of a good way to tie off burlap on a scope - it's really simple, and no zip ties.

16" BCM SS barrel and a 2.5-10 FFP.  It's a good shooter.
