Does anyone know when these were discontinued and perhaps for what reason? Also what were they going for in the end?

Now that is an old scope. It likely got discontinued when the TR24 was released. Who wants 1.25X when you can get 1X?

I don't think so.  I bought a TR24R in about 2009 and I've found reviews of the TR21 back in 2011.

Call Trijicon and ask.   Just cause the review was in 2011 doesn’t mean they were still making it, old stock is a thing  Either way I’m pretty they stopped making  the TR21 around 2010 give or take.

I vaguely remember the prices being pretty similar but that was a long time ago

I did send Trijicon a note asking and the reply was:

"The TR21 was offered between 2000 and 2009. MSRP was $900. They were discounted because we came out with a different version, the 1-4x24. "

I bought one in around 2009 and remember paying around $700 for it. It had Parallax and focus issues during Covid and I sent it in for service. They replaced it with a TR24 at no charge.

Surely because the 24 is just an all around superior optic. It has true 1X, and the eye relief is constant-ish whereas the 1.25-4 had a gigantic range of eye relief throughout its magnification range. Even then the 24 is easily eclipsed by the 26 in all but weight. The 21 is a dinosaur in terms of how it holds up relative to contemporary competition, and unless they can sell them for like $200 I doubt it makes financial sense to continue to contribute resources towards their production.

The TR21 did have, if I remember correctly, very long eye relief, which made it useful on certain scout-ish setups. Otherwise, very much outclassed by the TR24.

I ended up picking one up for $250. I had the one years ago that I sent in for service and Trijicon replaced with a TR24. But I remember the TR21 being pretty good so I felt $250 should be okay.
