I got elected to go through my late father-in-law’s reloading stuff, as none of my wife’s siblings want any of it. Looks like I may be inheriting up a Dillon 550 and a pile of various reloading components. He has several 1-lb cans of various powders that I can use. He also has a couple unopened cases of powder in there. Looks like 40-ish pounds of AA#8700.
It appears this stuff was originally developed for the .50 BMG, and might work well in some of the larger magnum rifle cartridges in .30, .33, and 7mm flavors. I have yet to see if the siblings-in-law left anything suitable for such a slow powder. I’m debating if it’s worth carting half way across the country with the limited amount of cargo space I have available. Anyone have any favorite cartridges for this stuff that I might keep my eye open for? |

Hope you can that powder to someone who can use it.
If it was me, I would take it as free is a hard deal to pass on. Good luck |

Update: there are a couple rifles chambered in .458 Win Mag. Sounds like 8700 could work in that one, but probably not ideal.

Pretty common for the big magnums, the rums/weatherbys/338LM, think stuff that holds 100 plus grains of powder..I have a few pounds for my 300rum..although it is not a go to powder for my use lately...
Burn rate wise, it is slightly slower than retumbo or reloader 26, quite a bit faster than US869 or RL-33....Might be usable with some of the new wonder cartridges such as 300prc and such... Have heard it can be used in smaller cartridges, mainly with cast bullets in 30-06... Attached File Also a good 50bmg powder for lighter bullets...... Attached File |

Did Accurate go out of business or were the merged into another company or...?
Is the powder ball or extruded? If extruded, what is the kernel size - normal, huge, small? |

Hodgdon is now the distributor for AA powders, along with IMR, Hodgdon, and Winchester powders. Originally Posted By Trollslayer: Is the powder ball or extruded? It looks like both are usable for the .30-06 class of cartridges, so I’m probably good. Although that’s likely more than I’ll shoot any of those cartridges in a lifetime. I will probably gift a bunch of it to a friend who shoots .50 BMG. I did manage to fit it all in the car after all. Of the stuff I use regularly, there were only one or two pounds of each. Stuff like H110, AA#7, a can of Unique, and one of 700-X. |

Kinda related-does anyone have a source for data with aa8700 in .338 Lapua Mag?
All the data I have either doesn’t have that powder, or doesn’t have that caliber. I think my manuals are from before .338 Lapua came out, or after that powder went away. So any help would be appreciated. |

I've not used aa8700 but I was looking up data for a surplus powder which suggested aa8700 for starting loads.
Old accurate manuals had some data. I was just looking for 7.62x54r but I'm sure there's some data for other calibers too. https://www.castpics.net/LoadData/Freebies/RM/Accurate.html |

No reason to throw away perfectly good powder, especially not when there is a worldwide shortage occurring due to a war burning up gunpowder at a high rate… |

With the 338LM you are going to need short bullets loaded long...Or ideally lighter bullets in a different case like 300rum with the lighter bullets...

What kind of velocity did you get? Just curious. Im actually using a surplus powder that they said to use AA8700 data for. But at least I have a good idea where to start. I have a bunch of it, and if it’s accurate then this would be a good way to use it. |

old Accurate Arms manuals (pdfs can be found online) recommend 8700 for:
.264 Win Mag, 7mm Rem Mag, .257 Weatherby, .270 Weatherby, and .300 Weatherby. Also recommended for: .25/06 Rem, .270 Win (“velocity and pressure will be reduced from normal, but accuracy is outstanding”) Loads also listed for: .257 Roberts, 6.5x55 Swedish, 7x57 Mauser, .280 Rem, 7mm Weatherby, 30/40 Krag, 7.62x54R, .30-06, .300 H&H, .308 Norma, .303 British, 8x57 Mauser, .300 Win Mag, .338 Win Mag, .45/70 Govt Their .458 Win Mag section does not list loads for 8700. Sample loads from Accurate Arms 1992 manual: 7mm Rem 160gr bullet: start 75.1gr (2757 fps), max 79.0gr (2933 fps) also loads for 8 other bullet weights .270 Win 150gr bullet: start 60.8gr (2387 fps), max 64.0gr (2513 fps) also loads for 7 other bullet weights .30-06 220gr bullet: start 58.9gr (2038 fps), max 62.0gr (2168 fps) 8700 only recommended in .30-06 for bullets 190-220gr .303 British 180gr bullet: start 47.5gr (1650 fps), max 50.0gr (1746 fps) also loads for 3 other bullet weights .45/70 475gr lead bullet: start 57.0gr (1083 fps), max 60.0gr (1146 fps) also lists load for another lead bullet weight American Reloading has in the past sold MP 740 (possibly other numbers too), which they list as similar to Accurate 8700 and suitable for 7mm Rem Mag, 28 Nosler, 300 Win Mag, 300 RUM & 338 Lapua Mag. |

I used to buy that stuff for a 7mm Remington Mag as it cost about 40% of other powders.
It was just too slow a powder even stuffed full with 175 grain bullets. Per the AA manual extract above, 79 grains with a 160 grain bullet has to be severely compressed with very low pressure at 2933 fps. I thought that rifle was a 2 MOA rifle until I tried out 7828 and got spectacular groups with high velocity, too. Sorry, but 8700 powder is flat out unsuited for all but severely overbore cartridges. |
