It's really interesting to see the evolution of setups through this thread.

Any newbies looking to start, the 'stop holes, make holes, plug holes' mantra is really good and helps keep it simple. This setup places more emphasis on the belt.

The other really common setup philosophy is carrier is primary gear, belt is secondary, and pack is sustainment. This setup is used for peeps who spend more time in there carrier or may rely on their carrier as way to actually do their task. (More common in military).

Lastly if you choose to go with the more simple setup and use more gear on your belt MAKE sure you train like that. With plates if possible. Getting gear off your belt with a carrier on can be a pain in the ass and you may realize that your 'perfect setup' sucks when used in conjunction with all your gear.

That's the newest addition and I don't really have experience with any of the other hydration carriers out there, but I like how it attaches to the carrier and it feels more secure than I expected. I haven't rucked with it or spent any time with it in the field. I'll try to remember to give you my thoughts once I come back from my next trip to the field.

I've worked to setup my belt+carrier with the following basic principals in mind. Doing so has resulted in fairly light/minimalist kit that I train in every time I shoot, without adding unnecessary stuff that adds weight and complexity. To each their own, of course.

The gun belt allows one to capably perform in a gunfight. So, pistol, speed reloads, knife.

A carrier allows one to enhance and sustain their effectiveness in a gunfight. Plates, additional/reserve mags, administrative items.

You can make good arguments for the IFAK being on either. Ease of access is more important than belt vs carrier, imo.

Awesome info.... I’d thought about ditching the Spiritus myself since like you said, it adds unnecessary bulk to my rig... somehow you end up cramming shit in there and the front pouch ALWAYS ends up getting thick...

I am one of those that feels an IFAK/Med equipment should be everywhere myself (in the car, something on your person/pack, on the belt, on my carrier)

Yep. You can do side plates as well but most of us don't think they're necessary unless you're in a stationary position.

They add weight and bulk.

You can get different sizes and cuts as well.

I use a shooter cut large in the front (left) and a medium cut SAPI in the back (right)

Esstac recommended those two. The medium shooter cut is a little bit small for me.

Despite being labeled as large and medium, the cuts vary a good bit in size.

Yep, PC fits them both great. Mine are 2nd from the top and the last

that will be fine , those are swimmers or shooters cut plates for better arm motion

some will run a sapi cut or rectangular plate in the back for a little more coverage

You can alternate sizes for extra coverage in the rear. Velocity Systems does something similar to this with their proprietary ULV cut armor and carrier. Personally, I like having both plates be swimmer cut for mounting a rifle front and not blocking my range of motion as much in the rear. When doing any kind of movement with the upper body, larger plates in the rear can limit the range of motion of shoulder blades and the trapezius & rear deltoid muscles. This may be a non-issue depending on how you stand with regard to SAPI plate sizes, but I think it is worth noting the possible interference that may occur. No one plate geometry is perfect for everyone.

Stay away from Keystone Tac Supply.  LONG wait, shitty customer service.  Enough for me to complain to the BBB and the Attorney General's office.

There are other places out there that will service you better, and actually provide a product.
