I am considering getting either a ruger sp101 in .357 magnum or a glock 19 in 9mm for CCW.
Vote for which I should get and comment on why. Poll inbound. |

5 bullets is not enough. Glock 19 is superior choice, if you can conceal it.
not to sound all fanboi here, but if glock 19 is an option, glock 19 is the answer
Get both. The 357 is a great "get the fuck off me" gun and the 19 is a great all arounder.
If you like being whacked in the hand with some force with a framing hammer 5 times in a row go for the .357.
I had a badass little S&W airweight that was just not pleasant any way I cut it lol. Also had a stainless Taurus that wasn't much better. |
Moar bullets might be better now days. Modern 9mm ammo is said to be pretty good. Glock is your answer although a smaller G26 isn't too bad assuming you don't live in Fergudishu.
About 5 yrs ago I quit carrying a single stack and went to a baby Glock, now I'm seriously thinking about going to a compact Glock for even more bullets. Fucking idiot in the white house has two more yrs to stir shit up. |

I;d take the Ruger but I hate Glocks and love revolvers. Anyone else, I'd suggest the Glock, as much as it pains me.

G19, more capacity and probably a lot easier to shoot than a snub nose .357.

Long story short. Used to carry a 642. Picked up pizza one night and walked home... Was followed by 5 men. 3 turned up my driveway behind me 2 stayed on the sidewalk. I placed pizza on the trunk of car, pulled J frame from pocket and turned toward them with gun in hand at low ready... They stopped, stared, turned and walked away. That was the last night I carried a 5 shot revolver. I know... CSB.
ETA: my vote was for glock 19 |

4" 9mm and 3" .357 will both push a 125gr a little over 1200 fps. http://www.ballisticsbytheinch.com/357mag.html
If I were you, I'd pick the one with the higher capacity, least recoil, better trigger, and the quickest reloads. |

The 19 might be the best general purpose handgun ever made. Perfect balance of size, weight, caliber, capacity, and price. Ton of aftermarket support, holster options, and ammo cheap enough to get plenty of practice. The 19 is a must buy in my opinion. 5 shot .357? No comparison whatsoever.

Glock 19 with Ruger LCR as a back up gun in your pocket Win-win

I have both an SP101 and a G27. The latter is easier to conceal and carry.
Even though the SP101 has a five round cylinder, it still feels bulbous in comparison to a Glock's flat slide. |

I love my revolvers, but when it gets right down to it the answer is G19.

What barrel length sp? I carry a 2" .38 sp101 occasionally with a good belt and holster I forget I'm
Carrying it. I'm not a glock fan, but the g19 is probably a better ccw for EVERYDAY carry for numerous reasons |
Find an indoor Range that rents both of the guns you're considering and get some trigger time on them. After that, you won't have to ask which one.
You're on the right path but instead of the Ruger I'd go J-Frame hammerless.

I have both and though I love the sp101, I've never cc it. Moar boolits always seems to win the choice for me.

I actually have and carry both.
The SP101 is a heavy brick, but is dimensionally smaller than the G19 in everything but cylinder width, and can be pocket carried in sturdy jeans, but not in light pants. It's my lazy "throw a gun on" carry piece. Your only real night sight option for the SP101 is a crimson trace laser (which I use). Barring that, it's not ideal for night use. Recoil is ok with the stock grips, but can be painful with harder aftermarket grips. The G19 is easier for me to shoot well, easier to equip with night sights, has more laser options, and has many good IWB concealable holster options. It's also generally faster than drawing a pocket carried revolver. For real "carry on the belt" carry, I think it's preferable to the SP101, but I wouldn't feel undergunned with either. If you're concerned about power, just get a .357 Sig Glock instead. |

I've had both. While both are quality pieces, they are both heavy for ccw IMO. Of the two, I would go Glock. The size\weight of the SP101 is just too much for the capacity for me.
