I wanted to like the FAL it's the first rifle I bought when I turned 18 but century arms ruined it for me.

Edit: I currently have an M1A

I like my M1A better than my FAL, but I wouldn't kick either of them out of the safe for no reason.

AR-10.

Just AR-10.

FAL is easier for basic field strip.  Detail strip sucks and requires the use of tooling. FAL sights aren't the best.  FAL was easier to field with optics (moreso now due to DSA railed upper).

M-14 slightly harder to field strip, but not extremely difficult.  Detail strip is easy with the use of the basic combo tool.  M-14 sights superior, but not well relegated to optics.

The M-14 should have been fielded in 1947.  Beretta took 9 months to convert their M-1 Garand machinery to produce the arguably superior to both M-14/FAL rifle the BM-59.  US Army Ordnance dicked around for almost 2 decades before coming up with the M-14.

Right. In the age of StG-44 and the AK-47. The M14 was fucking stupid.

They are both good rifles, if you want a full-size .308 magazine fed semi-auto.

Honestly, I think either is a great choice, and so "the best" is going to be more a matter of personal preference and ergonomics, and well as the particular role you need it for.  Obviously the M14 is a more accurate rifle, and perhaps has slightly better slights, but the FAL probably has slightly better ergonomics for a generalist infantry rifle.

Both are longer than they need to be, IMO.

If I was forced to make a choice, I'd probably pick the FAL, but I'd be perfectly happy with either.

I've numerous examples of both.  FAL is probably a better fighting gun.  But I find the M14 (M1A) easier to shoot accurately from longer distances and multiple positions.  So I still have an M1A and no more FALs.  Though I've often thought about replacing my 16" para FAL with another.

The only thing I don't like about the FAL really is the pressurized gas tube design.

I'm glad we adopted the M14 over the FAL. We got the M16 out of the deal. I think if we had the FAL we would have used it until the 80s. The M16 would have been a failed firearm. Who knows what our soldiers should be carrying today.

I've shot both.  I really like both.
I don't own an FAL. I do own an M1A. In fact, I just purchased my second M1A.

16" with a para stock feels perfect imho.

Im a small guy though, and even for me the para stock seems a wee bit short

I have an M1a and love it, the sights are fantastic.

That said (and I’ve said it before): If the US had adopted the FAL in a 6mm-ish caliber, we’d be posting our lively coronavirus debates and tranny discussions on FAL14.com. It was a great rifle, built for WWIII and beyond, and with the same level of product improvements that the M14 and M16 have undergone (some out of necessity), it could be a perfect rifle platform.

Plus given what lunacy the military is discussing now (the new rifle is a larger caliber than the 5.56mm NATO?!?) we could have avoided two entire rounds of actual rifle procurement and even with the product improvements and modifications, saved billions of taxpayer dollars.

FAL. The M14 was the sequel to the M1 Garand. And as we all know, sequels rarely do better than the original. FAL should have been chosen.

Agreed, outdated at the time of inception, the M14 is what the M1 Garand should have been. That being said I still own an M1a.

FAL is better no doubt. But I can understand why some prefer the M14. Probably because being American it's more familiar. I do like the M14 iron sights and trigger better. But that's about it. Wish we dropped the Garand and picked up the FAL instead of the M14. It's just a far more modern design.

6.5/.260 FAL would have been a great choice in the 50's.  Design it around some of the 140 grain 6.5 projectiles.

Decent compromise of weight and performance.

But still, an AR-10 design is superior in most ways.

I don’t want to spend the $$ to feed it.

FAL over the M14/M1A type easily. I have metric and commonwealth pattern FAL's and an M1A and I haven't touched the M1A in 10 years or so. The FAL's get lots of range and hunting time so the M1A is for sale during the next panic buying spree.
