Nice! Is the larger trigger guard and ambi safety part of the build?

Quoted: What do you think of my "Danny Archer" inspired CAR-15? Obviously not an exact clone. I know I'm almost 20 yrs late to the party, but I got a bug up my ass to do one after watching "Blood Diamond" last month. Been a while since I've seen it. I'd say 90% of the build is PSA parts. Since it wasn't a true clone, I decided to do more of an M81 woodland job on it. I just need to put the tape switch back on. Let's see your clones, or movie inspired builds. https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/271079/1000014079_jpg-3168635.JPG View Quote gun looks good, but don't care for the paint job. Its looks too clean and precise. Maybe a little wear on the finish and it will look more authentic. but good job, looks great. I never even attempted to paint any of my guns for this very reason. |

Mine in its current form.
It has an 11.5” heavy barrel. I really want to put a pencil barrel on it however Attached File |

Quoted: Looking at photos it almost looks like they cut it to some off length in-between 10.5 and 11.5. Obviously, as a chopped M-16A2 it will have some odd things about it that a real gun from the period would not have had. I do want to do a clone, but reflecting what an actual gun from the year in which it was set might have had. Were 10.5" barrels around in the late 1990s? Of not, I'm debating between 10" like the early carbines and the later 11.5". The moderator is also one made by the prop guys and looks like it's in-between the first and second gen moderators lengthwise, so I'm debating between the two gens, although I think first gen would look best as an imitation. Too bad functional moderators are considered suppressors. So dumb. View Quote I was interested in building a replica for quite a while. Things mentioned above made me realize that the best I could do would be to build a tribute. As I gathered parts the whole thing devolved to become an inspired by build, because good enough just didn’t feel good enough. I think I’ll pull it/that box of parts and have another look. |

The original XM177s got changed rather quickly because of it. |

I’ve been eyeing a USP-C lately to finish the Blood diamond setup. I’ll SBR it one day.

You weren't kidding. Learn something new every day. Thanks! The actual movie part is some sort of tube, of course, but yeah, it is meant to imitate moderators. I've also seen photos of some early 10" carbines of the subsequent models (like the XM177) with the earlier moderator. H&R (PSA) makes a complete Blood Diamond imitation upper which uses the faux 1st gen. moderator. They also use a 10" lightweight profile barrel. The moderate was meant to help the short barrel function although they still went to 11.5". Functional ones are deemed suppressors, though, but functional reproductions are made for those who must have them. |

Being a recovering cloner, I have always listed over a Blood Diamond “inspired” Israeli 733ish. This thread isn’t helping.

Pretty cool OP. And kudos to PSA for recognizing that "Blood Diamond" clones are desirable.

You're probably looking at something more akin to an XM177 to get a P&W to rifle length.

What is the draw to that particular iteration of an AR? Why is it commonly cloned?
