Buy a better grade of dry food.
The cheap stuff isn't good for them.

we feed ours expensive cat food because its supposed to be better for them
then again I know of at least 5 cats that ate friskies and lived outdoors for 18-23 years
the 18 year old has always been a trouble maker and is still going strong

That's often a sign that they are sick.

Cats are great until they get old. I'm getting very tired of cleaning up cat piss and feces off the floor becuase my 20 year old cat doesn't feel like walking to the litter box. Oftentimes he does it right in front of the damn litter box - and yes, I clean it out daily for his highness, so that's not the reason.

by all means get them checked out

then again... he could have just lost his "give a damn"
sister's cat did that, as long as he was within a few feet of the cat box that was good enough for him
try going with a very shallow pan that they dont have to climb into
what worked for him was a 24"x36" baking pan with super low sides
no idea why though because his old ass jumped on the bed just fine

I feed mine wet and dry Wellness Core.  It's grain free and quality food.
I have the litter box in the basement and I use fresh step.  If you clean it every 1-2 days you shouldn't have any odor issues.
Put a scratching post in every room in the house and put catnip on it.  My cats prefer the scratching post to scratching furniture.
Good luck with the little guy your a good man for adopting him and giving him a home.

Like said before, all of our indoor/outdoor cats do their scratching outdoors. In the winter they dont got out as often so we got them a post and they used it.

Overall you dont own a cat, the cat owns you.

That last part is true!! I used to not like cats at all. When I met my wife, she had a cat. It annoyed me for a couple of months, but now I think that our cat is the cutest kitty ever.

Edit: And for the OP, we feed our cat Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance wet and dry food.  She used to occasionaly paw the couch. Once we got her a kitty tree, it all stopped and now that is her favorite hangout.

definitely invest in a cat tree or two
they are ugly as sin but it gives the cats something to destroy and climb up on to get away from the dogs

I use Call of the Wild (Roast Venison and Salmon)

They love it, and it's been highly rated and reviewed.  Also, it's not very expensive, and is meant for cats of all life stages.

My 9 year-old cat did the same thing (this was 20 years ago.)

I got pissed at him, so I just locked him in the bathroom.

Turns out he had cancer and was probably in pain.  I had to put him down a week later.

I regret my stupidity every day of my life, and promise my cats not to be so fucking selfish with them.
