I was in the water probably less than a mile away when that happened.

I was greated by a giant turtle instead

Pretty eery seeing the helicopters and c130 (?) Circling over head for 2 days.

Seems like profiling to me. And, publishing the picture of that shark, who had nothing to do with this tragedy, is just wrong.

Too soon?

most people don't realize, that in the Gulf of Mexico, you're rarely more than 100 yards away from a shark. It may be a tiny shark, but you are almost always in proximity of one.

The shallowness of the water they are able to swim in is genuinely surprising.

I don't believe they've ever made it a hundred yards over the beach and into the hotel pool, so I'm probably pretty safe

I think for the book that's right, but in the movie they used some footage they got when a shark trashed a diver in a cage but he escapes, so they had let Hooper live.  Quint was eaten by the shark, legs 1st in the movie.

I like the story in the movie better.    The whole angle of hooper and the chiefs wife having an affair - the movie turned out better.

That is until the New Madrid fault shifts, and then the Gulf of Mexico extends almost all the way to Chicago and all the plains states.

And the three of them living on the boat rather than coming home every day is a better storyline too.

In FL I remember having a bag of red snapper on my hip at 50-60'.

Always ready to drop the bag if we saw a large shark.

Yep.  Always see them fishing and cruising by the boat looking for a freebie.    Was in AL this summer at the beach when one started thrashing about 30' from a buddy and me.  We were about 3' deep drinking beer and went "oh damn, that's cool".    Then we thought about it and started easing back.    Probably a 6ish foot bull or hammerhead snacking on stingray I guess.

When I was 10 or 11 a friend invited me to go to Dauphin Island (Mobile) overnight. After dark we went down the beach and saw a house where some guys were out on the deck. We started making coyote howls and they yelled, "Let's get them!" They ran after us so we headed back to his beach house. I got the bright idea to run out into the water to let them pass by. I went out about 20 yards and ducked down so only my head was above water. Of course they followed me to the water's edge and stood on the beach. They couldn't see me so I guess they thought I'd drowned. I finally came out and went back to my friend's place.

A decade later I was fishing off the mouth of Mobile bay and saw a large hammer head basking on the surface.

And when I saw the opening scene from Jaws..........

That is unfortunate. When you swim with the sharks, there is chance that you maybe eaten. Such as life.
