At least 50+ sharks on each side of that pier, mostly hammerheads, cruising in plain sight up and down the beach not 50 yards further out then where the people were swimming and wading. Right past where the waves break. Everyone splashing and having a good time oblivious. That’s all folks, that did it for me. Nope nope nope |

Quoted: Way back I had a paperback called "Shark Attack!", compiled from Navy records (including civilian shark victims). Some of the stories (paraphrased for brevity): 1) A doctor had his penis (yes, that) bitten off when spearfishing. 2) Some brilliant guy had his foot bitten off by 12 foot Tiger shark - in 3 inches of water. Pro Tip: don't fuck with sharks. 3) The winner was a dim bulb on a fishing charter, who caught a small dogfish. Holding it by the tail, he joked, "I'm going to swallow this!" The shark clamped onto the guy's neck, and did not release until they cut the jaws off the shark. The man bled to death before the boat could return to shore. (This was in the 60's, no life-flight.) View Quote There was also a guy(not mentioned in that book) who caught a small shark, stuffed a grenade in its mouth, pulled the pin and threw it back. It swam right under his boat before it blew up. Imagine explaining THAT to the insurance man. |

View Quote Dipre, the FWC captain, said he is not aware of visitors feeding fish at Sombrero Lighthouse. “There is no evidence of that and there have been no citations written,” he said. Capt. Dipre is either ignorant of what goes on at Sombrero reef or is attempting to minimize the situation. |

Here in the Tampa Bay area bull sharks are pretty common and they’re aggressive. You can go into the shipping channel that goes underneath the Sunshine Skyway and see Tiger Sharks. There used to be a female great white that frequented the area several years ago.She was GPS tagged and you could follow her movements.I warn people about the wildlife here but few pay me any attention. It’s not to scare people but most people just don’t pay close enough attention to their surroundings. There is a 8-10 acre lake 50 yards from my house that has several 10+ foot gators in it. I see idiots walking their dogs around it daily.I know of 2 incidents within the last 6 months where they’ve snatched peoples dogs. You have to pay attention here in Florida.

Quoted: This. Some marine biologists are finally admitting it. There is a reason why some animals were hunted to extinction or at least close to extinction. View Quote You can't be serious, no animals on this earth should be hunted to extinction only to child proof the earth. The beauty of life is a little danger that can be offset a little bit with some caution. I for one don't care to live in a bubble boy world because some people are scared. Now, I'm not saying we shouldn't allow hunting to keep the balance of the food chain in check but going to extinction levels seems insane. |

I was staying at the Fairmont Kea Lani for a week a few years back. Snorkeled, swam, spent endless hours in the water.
A week after I left, a guy kayaking there was resting with his legs in the water. Shake bit his leg off below the knee and he bled out before getting to shore. Swam with dolphins off the coast of Oahu the week before. It was amazing. Our guide said that a few weeks before, no dolphins…….but saw a monster tiger. |

I mean...yes, if you want to just take your chances with the laws of physics and thermo, while swimming through chocolate milk, then you will always have my respect. However...there are a lot prettier spots in the ocean, and if you aren't extremely unlucky or negligent, you can have a great time while wearing a 7mm (or less) regular wet suit, snap some pics with good viz, and still make it back to shore in time for tapas and a couple drinks (where, incidentally, the wildlife is also quite exotic). I know which variety I prefer. |

The worst thing about it is to have someone to be declared legally dead by the court system.
This happened to my cousin who disappeared like 30 years ago after he went spear fishing with his friends. It suck for my cousin's family not knowing what happened to him on that day. There was only speculation that he was attacked by a shark because they only found some of his gear in the area where he disappeared. Plus, since there was no body to be found, there is no way to say he was attacked by a shark listed on the legal documents and was never listed on any government reports as a shark attack. Couple years after my cousin's disappearance, I met a family friend at our family Christmas party. He was talking about something else when he mentioned that he was at the recent shark attack that killed his friend which became the first reported shark attack death in so many years after the last known recorded attack. In that shark attack, the friend was attacked from behind and half his body was bitten off. He died on the beach after the attack. He did not stand at a chance of survival. |
