There is quite a bit of local fishing around there, but you aren't talking about huge ports and tons of traffics. I doubt people haven't found it, but just didn't know its actual size.

Bacalar is a bigger tourist spot and the freshwater springs bring the crowds. Only venture out into the large bay for snorkeling and playing with the dolphins. The crocodiles are on the edge of this area and offer a tourist attraction for swimming and feeding them.

You look at Xcalak and the remote aspect makes it not very touristy. The boat transports have drifted off a decade ago and that ruined the frequent trips into the area from tourism and for tourism.

The aforementioned tidal flow makes it so they are “sharply stratified by a thin layer of freshwater on the surface that prevents oxygen from reaching the dense saltwater below,” per Discovery.com.

Instead of oxygen, these ultramarine portals are filled with the deadly gas hydrogen sulfide, making it perilous for people to venture into the abyss sans the proper equipment.

Crazy that if our bodies were put in the absolute cold vacuum of space you could survive longer than if you were in that pressure and gas.

2021 an expedition to the location of a blue hole of unknown depth in the bay was carried out in collaboration with Jesus Artemio Poot Villa (personal communication, March 15, 2021), a local fisherman.

The TJBH is located at 378823 m E, 2059390 m N (UTM 16Q) in the central portion of Chetumal Bay, where submerged coastal karstic sinkholes locally named ‘pozas’ have been reported (Carrillo et al., 2009b) (Figure 1A). Following Mylroie (2013) and Yao et al. (2020), these geomorphologic features could be recognized as blue holes since they are roughly circular and steep-walled karstic formations, open to the surface but with their depth fully developed below sea-level, and filled with water of fresh, marine and brackish chemistry.

Meh. They are protected by reef. Ship would crash well before hitting it.

They are sinkhole/cenotes from 7,000-10,000 years ago when the ocean water level was 150' shallower. I have dived a couple of the blue holes. They are all over the Caribbean. And when I dived one off of BVI, they said that where we were was miles from shore during the last ice age.

Just south of there is really interesting on Google Maps.

Hundreds of little black squares someone has used to cover up objects.

https://goo.gl/maps/i4Sa9e5e13Y7xGcb7

Even more here.  This particular location is very odd.  Some waves or something coming out of one of the boxes.

Topless boaters

This site doesn’t show the black boxes, but looking close there are white dots that could be either boats or some sort of pixelation to fog the area. Just have to scroll to the area:

I've done the Blue Hole in Long Island, Bahamas.

I thought it was the deepest at over 600 feet.

I can tell you that it gave me an unsettling feeling.  When the tide comes in the hole sucks you towards it.

I probably went down about 30 feet snorkeling.  My wife, girlfriend at the time wasn't having it.  As soon as we got there I could tell she immediately had the creeps and it gave me pause because I was so excited.  But she was correct something wasn't right.   It is beautiful though.

I dove a blue hole in Exuma. The DM allowed us to go as deep as we could with enough light to see the wall or 50’ whichever we hit first. At about 40’ I was becoming disoriented. “Unsettling” is the word for it.

The climate has been warming for 7,500 years.

All of the blue holes were on solid ground during the ice age. They were sink holes, cenotes, etc..

Also, did you know that Camels are actually native to North America and were brought to Asia and the ME via the land bridge in Alaska. They are not native to Asia or the ME. Then the N.A. camels went extinct. Now you know!
