Do you have a small, cheap camera of any kind?
Shining a flashlight in (or dropping one - or a lantern - on a rope) is an obvious first step, but if that doesn't net much you may dry hoisting down a camera with the timer set. |

if you go in that hole you will be eaten by a grue
if you dont go down in that hole a windigo will come out of the hole and kill you. best hire a sasquatch to go down there and straighten things out. |

Looks like the big boulders were used to try to plug the hole.
I'm sure it's very tempting to remove the boulders and debris and see what's down there. Just be sure to have a trained TV show dog who can run and tell somebody that you are "stuck in the well". Hopefully you'll be rescued within 30 minutes and it won't have to be continued on the next episode. Or... Maybe it's another "Mel's Hole". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mel |

You should enlarge the opening, there could be gold down there.
I would enlarge the opening if your drop light tells you it opens into a larger area. |

Go in, whats the worst that can happen.
Maybe there is nutty putty inside. |

That's where the Cherokee buried their treasure along the Trail of Tears. You'll be famous, you won't be rich though after they claim it but the IRS will still tax you for it.

I'm a project caver (dig open new and existing caves), that would get me excited, especially if there was good air movement from the hole.
